Okay so does anyone have any good strategies for this part of the game? I find this just ridiculous.  Everytime I do manage to kill off most of the mages, abominations come crawling out of that door there and not to mention more shades just appear in the middle of the room making it near impossible to control the horde. I just usually end up getting backed into a corner and killed. Kiting the hordes is not an option either because the mages are firing spells at me from all angles.  Also when I trying to use projectiles to hit the mages from a distance the game seems to really mess up with the range of the spells. Like I was on the staircase  right across from the other staircase which the mages were on and, when i commanded the attack my mage would proceed to run right into the wall of the stairs on the otherside and just stand there. The same goes for when I try and use AoE spells too. mage runs closer towards the circle mages and stands right at that god damned wall. Any help would be much appreciated.

Tell me about your party. I was able to clear this area on Hard, and I think I only died once.

Well my Hawke is a AoE mage primarily. Hawke has all of the elemental spells. Some of the spirit healing spells(revival), some arcane magic(arcane shield, mind blast crushing prison) some Primal(tempest, chain lighting) and a couple force magic spells(telekinesis, max Fortitude, fist of the maker) Fenris has most of the two hand talents as well as a few of his special talents. Isabella has a couple of her special talents and all of the 2 handed weapon talents. And Varric has most of the Bianca talents, most of the critical hit, power, speed buffs, and all of the special talents. I hope that's enough info lol.

strategy vs hard/core difficulties hordes mobs:

1) As soon as engagements start, select all, free movement on, run THE HELL A WAY to the corner of the map AS FAR AS POSSIBLE, until  only 2-4 mobs are visible on the right up corner map

2) team hold position, tank scout forward and lure 2-3 mobs to ur party at a time.

3) Repeat

actually not sure if you need to do this on hard mode. but in hardcore, if u dont run away intermediately , those ranged mobs will f ur mage/rogue up before ur tank move into the taunt range.

Thank you very much. I'm gonna try that., And the range mobs F up my rogue and mage all the time if I don't get away from their range. So it's not only for nightmare difficulty.
