When attempting to launch ME2 from Steam, I get the following error:

MassEffect2.exe is v1.02 as seen here:

System Details are (Windows 7 SP1 64-bit):

Finally, my PhysX System Software is version 9.10.0514 (as compared to version 9.09.0841 which shipped with the game). I've also confirmed this problem occurs with version 9.10.0513 (the latest available on Nvidia's website).

A little background: at the time of ME2's release, the PhysX System Software came with a standalone application called the PhysX Control Panel. This has since been deprecated, and the PhysX System Software is now bundled with Nvidia drivers (and uses the Nvidia Control Panel to manage PhysX).
For ATI users like me, this means the configuration is inaccessible. Furthermore, the PhysX System Software installation requirement is now deprecated in PhysX SDK 2.8.4 and above, so the support status is unclear.

In any event, the game is refusing to launch in the presence of these newer versions of PhysX System Software. The game does work with version 9.09.0841 (but then other games have issues - i.e. Mafia 2). I've confirmed this on a completely fresh Windows 7 SP1 machine so it is not a matter of driver or registry corruption.

It seems a similar issue is referenced here, but this did not work for me.

Help?

There were two entirely separate PhysX executables. One ran on all X86
cpus (AMD, Intel), while the other originally ran on the Aegeia
dedicated graphics support card (but essentially they were doing exactly
the smae things).  Now, that second one is the PhysX for nVIDIA GPUs,
which doesn't have to work on CPUs or with Radeons, and is normally part
of the full Geforce driver package.  AFAIK, the one included with the
game automatically selects for CPU operation, no matter the GPU (but it
includes the other executeable, and there is a way to TELL it to use an
nVIDIA card).

This is incorrect. The version that ships with the game (9.09.0841) allows you to choose to run PhysX on the CPU or the GPU (assuming that it is supported).
For non-Nvidia GPUs, this defaults to CPU and the GPU option is greyed out (again, 9.10.0513/0514 do not include the configuration utility).

Okay, I've just installed a bunch of the DLCs, and the game now works. Strange things are afoot!

Which DLCs, please? Also, do you have Steam on your primary HDD?

I just spent 6 hours trying to clear up this physx problem on a Win 7 i7 with NVidia GTX 260. No go. Near as I can tell, it can't be done. And I came at this a LOT of different ways.

In a nutshell, if you want to run anything approaching current drivers for Nvidia, you are screwed if you have a GTX 260. This is a SHOW STOPPER and the devs should be on this like white on rice. Or the card restrictions need to be clearly laid out at point of sale (D2D or retail). Says 9800 GX or better, I believe. Any modern NVidia card is better, but they don't all work. Hate that crap because I really want to play this game.

GTX 260 - no go. The question is ... even if I invest in a newer NVidia card, WHICH ONES WILL WORK? And is there any way to know if they will keep working as drivers advance.

EA should be ashamed over this one. They are normally quite a bit more reliable. Selling a product that can't be used for the purpose intended is kinda like theft. Not counting my time. Grrr.
