First off, sorry if this has already been asked; it's quite a hard thing to search for!

I think it's almost universally agreed that playing as an archer is boring, so doesn't that make all the bows you find in the game completely pointless unless you have the Exiled Prince DLC?  Or have I somehow managed to miss recruiting a party member?

I haven't finished the game yet (I'm about two hours past beating the Arishok), so if anyone has an answer involving something after this, can you please be as vague as possible? :) Just "they are pointless" or "they're not pointless" will do!

Archer is far from boring. And yes, if you don't have Sebastian in your party you can safely sell your bows.

Yeah, just before I bumped this thread I saw another one saying how archer is pretty good now. I haven't had time to finish one playthrough yet (with work etc), let alone time to experiment with the other classes, so I was basing that assumption on DA:O.

Maybe you don't agree with that either, but I started an Awakening playthrough with an archer, and got bored of it before the end of the intro :P

Heh, archery was sort of poorly implemented in Origins. IIRC, by the time you got to Awakening you did more damage by simply auto-attacking than using any abilities (due to crit damage scaling). It didn't make for very compelling gameplay...
Archery in DAII actually has worthwhile abilities, especially if you're playing on Nightmare (where cross-class combos truly come into play).

Sounds pretty interesting. I'm still on my first playthrough as a sword and board warrior, straight in on hard. I'm already set on a dual-weilding rogue for my second playthrough but I'll have to try an archer at some point.

Archer is boring from the perspective that you are not pressing tons of buttons continuously, but if you enjoy things like 1-shotting mobs from ridiculous distances, or are entertained by simply watching large numbers scroll up the screen, then archer is anything but boring.

In fact, I think I pressed more buttons as an archer than I have any other spec,,,,,because you need to press "r" ever 1.3 secs to find another target.

I just finished an archers playthrough and it was awesome! They are great for one shoot killing things. Their arrows also have knockback which is sweet! By the end of the game I was doing thousands of points of damage with almost every shot. I had one attack against an Arcane Horror that did 58,789 damage! Overkill in the extreme. ;)

Another benefit of playing the archer is that it gives you a more tactical view of the battles because you're further away from most of the action. The only time I had any difficulties with the class was when I had to duel someone in an enclosed space... I actually died during that fight, but quickly learned how to handle it the next time I played... which meant a lot of running in circles and diagonals. ;)

you are kidding about the 58k dmg hit right? O.o if not mind explaining how you build your archer?

Highest I saw was a 24k Assassinate without using any debuffs. I imagine it can easily reach 58k if you debuff and if you have a bit of luck.

Highest Punishing Lance crit I saw was 13k. I thought that was pretty good too.

Jaldaen: Was that the Arishok by any chance? That was my tactic with my warrior - run away a bit then quickly charge in for an attack :P

Looks like I will definitely have to play as an archer at some point. Maybe if I get bored of dual-wielding I'll re-allocate my abilities and give it a go...

I'm not kidding about the damage. The archer gets bows that do 130 something base damage by the end of the game. Take that and add as many crit damage raising items/abilities as you can and bump your Dex and Cun up as high as you can and go assassin all the way. Voila! You are a death machine! Mark of Death and Assassinate are awesome, especially in combo with damage resistance reducing spells! I can't claim I built the most efficient build... I probably could have squeezed some more crit damage from abilities with a re-spec potion, but I had a blast and decided to roll with the character. I'm also unsure if Dex or Cun is better. I maxed out Dex after getting Cunning up to 40, but I'm not a math guy so I don't know if I should have focused on Cunning instead for more critical damage.

I think you need a balance. Oh and in that case damn your luck because I had higher crit damage then :)

I had equal amounts of dex and cun, and I think I could even have had a bit more cun without hurting my autoattack too much.

It was nice to have my Dex so high that I autocrited bosses ;)
