So I have all 3 now, but I've only used Beth so far as my mage.  Would it be better to use one of the other Mages?  I have Hawke (sword/shield) Aveline, and Varric.  I didn't intentionally want 2 tanks, but I didn't know who was going to be in this game.  I'm most likely going to respec Hawke into  a 2hander, so what mage would work best with my party?  Hard Mode btw.

anders has the cool healing specialization with groupheal and resurrection.
merril has the 'bloodmage' pariah specialization and no conventional healng
bethany has no specialization
don't worry bout aveline, u will get more companion to replace her if, u will need the dps for hardmode.

I personally pick Anders to heal and let either Isabela and Varric with dealing the dmg while i Tank, or go Isabela and Fenris as DPS. I only use the mage as supporter/healer so I stick with Anders and i find it quite necessary even though i only play on Hard so i figure i'll be using him for sure on my next playthrough on nightmare.

Bethany can be a good all around Mage as you got a lot of options in the way you 'build' her. She is not accessible the whole game though, keep this in mind. Anders is likely your best full support choice as he has a great specialization that helps him with this. Merrill really only works as an offensive Mage, she lacks support abilities.

Personally my Hawke is a Mage who I use as a Creation/Blood Mage while I have Merrill with me (Largely for story reasons as well) which is fully trained in Primal and Elemental abilities for huge AoE damage.

But, generally, I'd say Anders is the most useful for most people.

Merrill can be built as a killer bloodmage once you get a few bonus items and maybe respec all her willpower into con. Towards the end I had her runnig 3 sustainables plus blood of the first on mana with 400hp counting as 2800 mana - miles too much to use. She was also +22 health regen + stealing health from all close enemies. Spread out her spell points to a variety of spells thereby limiting the problem of cooldown by always having another choice - you can have THREE duration AOE spells, plus fireball & chain lightning, so mobs crumble in front of her. She's a casting machine who has good defence/armour/resistances due to sustainables plus a massive pool of hp. Whack on a lifeward potion and she's way too good (I assume this works).

As mentioned above Anders is your best choice as healer/support but I don't like the guy.

Bethany is your alrounder but again, as mentioned above, she's not available 100% of the time, so if you're going to want healing your only choice is Anders (or yourself).

Anders isn't as good as he should be. He's missing that Second Chance passive.

Always keep Bethany. Don't use Anders. You'll "thank" me later.
