I can play around 20 minutes or so and then I can expect a crash to desktop while in combat.  This is continuous.  Once I exit and reload my last save I can play through the point where it last crashed but the same thing will happen again later on.  This has become quite annoying.  I meet all the requirement have downloaded patch 1.04 and my video drivers are up to date.  My personal opinion is that there is a bug with the game not my system.  I say this because I have several other games on my system and have no problems playing them.

My Video card AMD Radeon 5450 (1GB)

If anyone has a walkaround for the above problem is would be appriciated.

Your video graphics is halfway decent, so if you are having trouble, it is something else other than that.  You will need to concentrate on one or the other game at a time when looking for help, either DA2, or this one.

An HD 5450 is really not intended to play games with, not even games the same age as the card is.  It is barely above minimum, so it can be a cause for trouble.  in any case, a great deal more information is required than has been offered (and to coru, it is my own policy to only answer the OP author, not any piggy back comments, so you need your own report form, separately, probably in the DA2 Tech forum -- IMO).

Try running the game on only one core of your CPU, this game is notorious for not running properly on multicore CPUs, at least that "solved" the constant crashing for me.

I have the same issue, I can't finish the endgame - I was thinking of doing a whole DA:O/DLC/Awakenings>DA:2 run, but after I installed the DA2 demo, the 1.04 patch and the Witch hunt DLC, I can't play for more than a few minutes before DA:O comes down around my ears - and I am on a fairly decent multicore- system which ran DA:O very, very smoothly until I installed the above.

HW on my quadcore box:

Intel i7 870 CPU@2.93
8 Gb RAM
NVidia GeForce GTX 480/1.5 Gb V-RAM

SW

Win 7 64 bits U
DirectX 11

When you can't save when in combat, it gets very old, very fast when you can't finish a run of about 90 hrs of gaming, especially if you wanted to create a starting point for the followup.
Come on BioWare, you have a forum full of this issue, and some post-release breathing space after (even though i am sure you need to work on a DA:2 patch too) - can't you guys take some time to figure a patch for this?

also having the same issue. it doesn't just crash...it outright shuts down my pc. i just finished playing through DA2, and wanted to go back through with the DLC. The game used to run fine when I got it originally. Has to be something in one of the DLC =/

I agree - I was finishing a game from the beginning of the Deep Trenches, I'd put it away before Christmas, picked it up again a week and a half ago, which is also when I installed the patch, DA:2 demo, and the Witch Hunter DLC . I'd had a merry old time playing my game on Nightmare level up til then; No crashes, no nothing, just lots of "It's a gusher!", "We are victorious agan" and other combat banter, no lockups.
Had to roll back to Normal level to get the framerate playable now, and I still can't finish off my ArchDemon without crashing, which is really annoying,

I am going to try rolling back to an earlier DirectX - I hadn't installed the patch and DLC yet when I picked up my game, but I had installed my DA:2 demo and the update, and I did notice some choppiness then

so I did a clean install of DAO. reinstalled awakening, and patched up to 1.03 without a problem. Patched to 1.04...crash. i would recommend rolling back until the problem is solved =/

Keep an eye on your PSU.  PSU issues are generally the cause of a PC spontaneously turning off.

You know, I've been waiting for a proper DAO patch since 1.03 and 1.04, which was released on 19 July 2010. I had high hopes when DA2 went gold so that BW had time again to patch DAO... but there is nothing in sight. Anyhow, the devs do not answer when kindly asked if DAO will get a better patch than 1.03 and 1.04 are.

I believe that there will be no more patches for DA:O, and if there is, I'll be shocked...

Let's hope you'll get shocked somewhere down the line ;-)

I ran a round of DA:O on my old box yesterday, with worse specs but no patches, and ran in a manner which was ridiculously awesome ;-)

DLCs installed were the ones that came w my version, Return to Ostagar and the Shale one

I did try a DirectX rollback as well on my current box - some better performance, but still crap - so it must be 1.04.

As DA:O is still a selling product, and a potential gateway drug into the whole Dragon Age franchise, I would hope it'd at least make some financial or development sense to release a patch; less complaints, less time/money spent on tech support, etc.

This is so frustrating. How am I supposed to get through the game so I can enjoy DA2? I really hope someone fixes this, it's getting old...

Ok, so I managed to get a crash-free run on my endgame - I am not sure it will solve anyone else¨s issue, but it helped me to shut down *every* service with access to the net, and every service which accessed my soundcard - so no mail, no chat-clients, no browser, no winamp, no spotify, no *nothing* but DA:O. Use an iPod or Zen or whatever to play your music instead (me, I cant stand to game w/o music :-))
Also, it got real choppy after a round of intense space-bar bashing, so the best you can there is to watch the slo-mo and hope you have enough health potions to live through any assault until it behaves again.

For some reason it also helped to crank my screen res up - I'd set it to 16:9, it did actually help to set it to 16:10, my native res.

I recently reinstalled DA:O to play through again before getting into DA2.

I originally played DA:O when it first launched (so this would have been version 1.00 of the game) on a rather mid-range PC (Core 2 Duo, 3 GB RAM, 8800 Ultra) running Windows Vista 32-bit with no DLC other than what was included with the Collector's Edition of the game (Shale and Wardens Keep I believe). I had ZERO issues with this original play through and the game was awesome.

Now I have DA:O installed (patched up to 1.04) on a high-end PC (i7 950, 12 GB RAM, 2 x GTX 580 in SLI) running Windows 7 64-bit with *ALL* DLC installed including Awakening. I'm having the same issue as most people in this thread. My game will crash to the desktop and I will receive the following error message:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: DAOrigins.exe
Application Version: 1.4.12393.0
Application Timestamp: 4c093423
Fault Module Name: DAOrigins.exe

The crash seems to happen at random. Sometimes the crash will occur during a fight, sometimes while entering a new area or building (on the loading screen or immediately after), sometimes while just walking around the map. I haven't had any crashing occur during cut-scenes or while accessing the inventory, map or quest screens. I'm not sure if this is pure coincidence or if I just haven't had a crash occur yet during those times.

Sometimes I will experience a little lag in-game before the crash and sometimes not. Sometimes the loading screens shown while entering a new area will be completely black except for the "Loading...." text, and then sometimes it will crash and sometimes not.

I have already tried setting the processor affinity for DA:O according to the PC support post on this forum and I'm still experiencing the random crashing. I also tried running the game in Windows XP compatibility mode and I'm still crashing. I have also tried playing around with the video options within the configuration utility (VSync off/on, AA off/2x/4x/6x/8x, Detail low/med/high).

I'm not sure if this may be effecting this at all but I do run the game across (3) Acer 24" displays @ 5760 x 1080.

I would really like to play this great game again without having to re-start the game up to 15 times an hour....

Yep, tried numerous things to see if it would help with the crashing and nothing works. It's definitely on their end and needs a hotfix/update to rectify the situation. /sadness

Regretfully, in your case, there will be no "fix" tailored to that hardware, as I'm sure amounts to a relatively causative portion. Laptops are not supported, nor are graphics that do not meet the official requirements.

Obysk's SLI'd cards could represent some of his problem. DAO wasn't designed with CF / SLI as the normal mode (it's actually rather "old" in the sense of when it was being coded), and has never responded at all well to dual GPUs (that's not an unqualified negative -- some people have managed to run the game that way).

The last two patches most certainly should not have created new problems for many users of Vista / Win 7, and should have been corrected long ago.

Well Gorath Alpha, those last two patches didn't correct problems and seems to only have created new ones. The game is also constantly crashing on me during battle scenes and I'm patched up to 1.04. I've done 5 fresh reinstalls in the last 3 days! Now, I'm hesitant on buying part 2 because EA doesn't seem to be trying to help those having problems with part 1, not to mention, some on part 2 are also having these similar problems. My system is pretty up to date except for my graphics cards which I've had to revert back to my older ones because my Nvidia 480 went out. Here is my current set up...

Intel 980X Extreme 6 Cores(12 Threads) 3.33Ghz
8GB Ram
2 ATi HD 4870 X2 in Crossfire(Until I purchase 2 Nvidia's GTX 480's in SLi)
Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit

I have too experienced these crashes, during combat mainly but I'm surpirzed that EA which is such a big company wouldnt take the time to help out people who are having problems.

I fear it's a case of the bean counters (Accountants) the percentage of owners with instability caused by patch 1.03 / 1.04 is below some threshold beyond which they would set aside funds for continuing to work on patches.
