the idol is another tell. lyrium from what i read and heard in the game, is the essence of magic in its raw state. Dwarves built up a resistance to magic over the years by being near and around it for so long. This also has generally made them lose the ability to be a mage.
Now the idol was made out of a lyrium that was incredibly pure(they state this during the campaign and the description of it when highlighted before triggering the cutscene is pure-lyrium idol or some such). Which i infer that its concentrated magic essence in its purest form. Which would be ideal to house a spirit, demon or god. The ruins also were made somewhere around the first blight.
Powerful idol, making people thing it needs to be worshipped(bartrand), making people crazy who come in contact with it for a decent period of time(meredith, bartrand, and im guessing her taking the sword she made out of the idol with her wherever she went caused the templars and mages around her to heighten their actions and thoughts which precipitated the whole act 3 war), sealed in an underground thaig that was around the time of the first blight and downfall of magic, can lead one to thing that either the maker, or the real cause of the first blight is directly connected with the idol.
The one thing that confuses me is did meredith destroy the sword to take in its power, in which case we killed whatever ended up posessing (which seems like a mean feat) or did unleashing it like that free it for whats to come?
The chantry is in shambles, the circle is rebelling, flemeth is doing her thing to progress it towards a result she wants, morrigan is doing the same to her wishes, lelianna is evidently working with the chantry seekers to fix their mess, and the warden is somewhere doing something else. i know one thing that it all adds up to, and that is a reckoning is coming and the hero of kirkwall, varric and anders are the cause of it(although not intentionally for the hero and varric, anders is just messed up in the head)

I reckon it is about Urthemiel's return to the world and his/her rise to power. The remaining old gods will be freed and be revealed as the dwarven deities, worshipped in the primeval thaig. Cue the darkspawn swarming them.

Very creepy with sandal ive always knew he wasnt stupid, maybe he was smart but some lyrium idol or a wizzard or a god destroyed his mind and locked the valuble information about old magic and gods deep in his mind and he only remembers enchantment, maybe he liked shiny,or maybe he is a superior race, some super god dwarf old 10 000 years who knows old secrets,he is very interesting,he folows you in DA1 andDA2,maybe what leliana meant in the''the champion and warden it cannot be a coincidance''that they are both some kind of heros who will unlock aincet magic maybe sandal wanted to folow big hearos for unceirtan reasons,i dont know but im looking foward to awnser questions about sandal in DA3,there is got to be something about sandal in DA series,im just guessing stupid thing now but i beleve that all dragon age story has to do with sandal

Well I like to think he is talking about a Warden/Mage/Dragon man who will come and save the world and make mama Morrigan and Papa Warden proud. That may just be my play through though.

Sandal may just really be what he is, even if he is special, he may still be just some kind of idiot savant, but one that's been touched by some great power.
It'd be way too cliche to have him all of a sudden go apotheosis on us, but it's clear he bears the touch of something bigger, and possibly something non-malevolent but likely still a threat due to just the sheer scale and otherworldliness of it.
