i have this ability for varric and i have tried it on plenty of enemy types. i get a knockback. so far i have seen it work in chapter I   but not in II or III ? it always knocks back ppl and never gives the disorient. whats the deal with this ability? is this intended or somethings wrong here? i have the extra talent to make it disorient ppl also.

Pinning shot often works for Sebastian but I haven't seen it work once for Varric. I assume it is a bug.

I have used it lots but I don't remember actually disorienting anyone with it.

Varric's pinning shot never pins down for some reason. Always resisted. Still worth it for the extra damage, but the upgrades are waste of points... :(

Pinning shot DOES work, but the duration is very, very short. If you pause at just the right moment, you can see the disorient effect, but it fades in less than a second. Pretty sure this is bugged.

Yeah that might explain it. I don't see the point in using Pinning Shot at all then. In my archer playthrough, I respecced out of it and never upgraded it again.

I thought it wasn't really worth it damage-wise either late in the game when auto-attack is very powerful. Maybe that's just me though.

The rogus's assasin ability "marked for death" seems to do the same thing, it vanishes right after I use it.

Really? Mine seems to work fine for the most part. I think maybe a few times it didn't last so long on bosses.

Yup, just started playing a DW rogue Hawke and noticed the same thing.

my mark for death lasts a reasonably long time (around 10s I believe), but I never see any DISORIENT icon when using Disorienting Shot for my rogue Hawke or Varric

This blows because you have to put a lot of points into Sabotage to get the Fatiguing Fog DISORIENT upgrade.

Arg. I can't get this ability to work with Varric at all. Shows up for a brief fraction of a second, can't even pause in time for me to see it which tells me the time is too brief even for human reflexes.

Unfortunate since it's the only Disorient ability I have in my party typically.

Been using Varric for a while, don't recall it ever working, not even once.

Bioware please get this fixed. Annoying to play with abilities that don't work.

Disorienting Shot is bugged. If you look closely you will see the DISORIENT icon for about a microsecond. Until it is fixed it is better to respec and use the talent point for something else.

as mentioned before, it seems to work for sebastion - at least from time to time.
but varric does really high dmg with it I'd get it anyway.

Pinning Shot disorient does work but it's so badly implemented that it's not even worth it.

1. The enemy has to be successfully pinned for the Disorient to work.
2. Any damage the enemy takes will free the mob, thus removing the disorient.
3. Anything that adds +damage (e.g. Elemental Weapons buff, Runes, Innate bow stats) to your bow will immediately break your disorient because it will always deal damage a split second after the disorient applies.

That explains it. Thanks for describing what was going on.

I think I've only seen the disorient debuff appear once from pinning shot.

These item and skill bugs are really hampering my enjoyment of the game. I shouldn't have to worry about whether feature X is actually working or not.

In my experience, it has had the pinning effect (though I never bothered to upgrade to disorienting) with an AI-controlled character, but not with a micro'ed character. I ended up respeccing my archer playthrough as I wanted the disorient effect for cross-class combo (on nightmare difficulty, those are very important to use), but wasn't getting it EVER (not once by level 15), so I ditched it and downgraded it altogether, and spent the 2 points I recovered elsewhere.

BioWare, please fix this, as it's a real shame to not be able to use it - and particularly annoying as the ability is a prerequisite for pretty much the rest of archery, so it ends up being a required but wasted skill point.
