This is hilarious: I kept Wesley's shield the whole time, knowing that it probably meant something to Aveline, but later in the game she gets all pissed off when I try to give her some other shield, complaining that I sold Wesley's shield.

BUT I DIDN'T!

Apparently the developers just assume that everyone will sell Wesley's shield, and thus you get chewed out by Aveline even if you kept the shield. Lame.

:P

Aveline only recognizes that they still have it if she has it equipped. It's... odd. I honestly don't know how they didn't forsee players holding onto it after it was unequipped.

If she has it equipped, she'll acknowledge it.

Oh good to know that she yells at you even if you keep the shield. I felt awful when she tore me a new one for selling it.

If she has it equipped, she recognizes she still has it.  So she yells at you for trying to get her to replace it.

Well, she specifically says that you sold it...

...and besides, by that point in the game Wesley's shield would be really weak compared to so many others, and I can't see why anyone would still have it equipped anyway.

Clearly a case of "the dev team didn't think of everything".
Though this carries the unfortunate implication that those who tested the game were somewhat dickish. Selling what's probably Aveline's only thing to remember her husband by and all. They couldn't have kept it in their storage chests? It's not like the damned thing is worth much... What? I just guessed that.

(Yeah, I know some of them probably noticed it but most likely it was decided this glitch wasn't worth fixing).

I sold it, thinking I was doing her a favor by equipping her with a better shield. Obviously a bad decision...

Don't listen to her. Being able to customize your party members' equipment is more important than what they think, sme people say. :P

I put it in my inventory to see what happens and she accused me of "showing it around" as I must have recognised "its worth". Ya right, this mage is running around Kirkwall proudly flaunting the level 2 shield he stole off a dead templar.

Incorrect, she says "you pass it around" despite the fact that it's restricted to only her if it's in your bag and not equipped on her.

I had it in storage, and she thought I had in fact sold it.

the devs pretty much prepared for every eventuality with this one. If the Shield is equipped she praises it's worth, if it's in your Inventory she accuses you of taking it from her and passing it around, if it's not in your Inventory she assumes you sold it. Pretty solid work imo.

I kept the shield in my storage chest and she says I sold it.

I like the idea of this, but I'm not big on the execution. Changing her shield for the first time should prompt some sort of conversation about it, where you can convince her or force her to use another one and make the case for a better shield protecting her more. Once the shield is "retired" it could be hanging in her office, or you have the option of being a jerk and telling her you'll sell it. I think there would be plenty of ways to handle this. Maybe give the player a costly way to have it upgraded so she can keep using it. I like that she is reactive to what you do with it, but I dislike her bringing it up so long after the fact. Why wouldn't she say something about it at the time you switch it out?

It's also sort of unfair to the player when the game's expectations aren't consistent. Robbing chests right in front of anyone and everyone causes no reaction from anybody Aveline included, but putting Wesley's shield in your storage chest for safe keeping earns you a rebuke? Does not compute.

Ha... I never got this conversation ever (in 2 play-throughs.) I put the shield in storage, didn't sell it, and she never accused me of selling it. >>

First game she accused me of selling it. Second game, she accused me of showing it around 'cause I was curious if it was in the inventory, she'd not say I sold it. (I had it in the storage chest in the first game, 'cause well, her husband's shield and all).

I would guess the storage chest from a programming POV uses many of the routines as a store so it counts as being sold inside there, unfortunately.

Yeah I was a little annoyed because I actually kept the thing stored at the mansion along with all my allies' starting equipment. Not a huge problem. I can see them not bothering to take this into account when writing/programming the scene.

Although to be fair, I would have sold it if it was worth a decent amount of coin.

Like others said I never got this convo, just put the shield in storage... and that was that. Never came up in conversation.Which makes me sad, I'd liked to have had a convo with her about the shield.

You have to talk with her with a gift in your inventory (Shield of the knight herself found during Offered and Lost) to trigger the conversation.

I kept the shield AND the sword in storage for no reason other than stupid sentimentality.

Ah I see, yeah I missed that item during the quest and was not pleased when I found out about it later.

And you people don't see, that outright selling it, or keeping a valuable heirloom in YOUR trunk in YOUR mansion, doesn't make that big of a difference to Aveline?

Well, it's not like the game gives you the option to do much of anything else.
