I sold it, thinking I was doing her a favor by equipping her with a better shield. Obviously a bad decision...

Well, she specifically says that you sold it...
...and besides, by that point in the game Wesley's shield would be really weak compared to so many others, and I can't see why anyone would still have it equipped anyway.
Incorrect, she says "you pass it around" despite the fact that it's restricted to only her if it's in your bag and not equipped on her.
No, in my game she said that I sold it.
Tried different convo options, and she always says the same thing. Maybe in your game she said something different, but assuming that someone else's experience is "incorrect" is downright laughable. Get a clue.

this never happened to me when i changed her shield did i do something wrong?
Nope. Aveline doesn't mind using different shields or even giving up Wesley's shield. But there is one shield, the Shield of the Knight Herself, Aveline's "gift," that triggers a different issue. You probably just haven't run across it yet.
As an aside, "trigger" is probably a better word than "gift" because they aren't meant to always be positive things. Generally, a gift from a rival is viewed in that context. Some followers have completely different dialogues for getting a gift from a friend or rival, and it pushes them in the same direction. In Aveline's case, she has just the one, but your responses decide whether you get rivalry or friendship.
Ahh, was wondering how that happened. Four runs through the Captain's Condolences and I just got it on my rogue game. Thought it was an epically awesome bonding moment for them and was curious why my two mages and the warrior (who came after the rogue) didn't get it. Thought it might have had something to do with my rogue flirting with her during the Long Road.
Good to know it'll be patched up, and how to get it anyways in the meantime, I <3'ed that story so much.
On topic though: I also kept all my companions starting equipment though in my house/estate storage rather then active inventory so was rather thrown when she accused me of selling it. From a game-mechanic standpoint, I can see how it works, and how an 'in_player_storage_chest' flag might be overly complicated, but it was still somewhat annoying.
