Hmmm, I'm in my forties with a reasonable education (which I'm sure I squandered by becoming a homemaker after having chidlren) and I love the male romance options -- one in a very positive way, and one in a very negative way. I'm not sure that age or education has much to do with taste.

This. I personally find it to be a tad off-putting that the post begins with stating that I'm this and this gender, this and this age and I have this and that in my life. None of that stuff matters when in the end, it's just your personal taste. I dislike Fenris a lot myself but I absolutely love Anders, with a tragic cherry on top. As for DA:O LI's...Disliked Zevran alot but liked Alistair. But he was way too sweet to appeal as a realistic character for me. Then again, these games aren't about 100% realism for me.

I'm 25 (26 in a few months) and female. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Data Processing. I'm in a relationship and just accidentally colored my fiancés hair orange...do I get a lollipop?

Last time the women got Leliana too.

This time we got Merrill and Isabela.

There are many things wrong with DA2, but this is something they got right.

Come over to the dark side, Laura. You know you want to.

I second that. Seriously I love Bioware for giving my fem!Shep Liara and my fem!Warden Leliana and now fem!Hawke gets both Merrill and Isabela.

But I have to give them credit for the male LI's in the Dragon Age series because I can't stand to romance Kaiden or Jacob or even Carth but in DA:O and DA2 they made male LI's that I actually like and can carry through on the romances with them. With the exception of Garrus and Thane their previous male LI's weren't even likeable to me as characters, I'd have them around only until they could be replaced and then I pretty much ignored them for the rest of the game until it came time to get their character quest. I like Fenris and Anders even when they are being douchebags to Merrill in her Act 2 quest or to me because they don't agree with my current Hawke.

Bella would be better off without Edward or Jacob, I don't think Hawke would be better off without Isabela, Anders, Fenris, Merrill or Sebastian.

I'm not so sure about that. While I love Anders deardly, I kind of think my Hawke would have been better off not getting involved in that train wreck.

Oddly enough, I realized late in the game that my mage Hawke would have DEFINITELY turned to blood magic if not for Anders' influence...both because of metagaming (I wasn't planning on using the Spirit Healer spec), and roleplaying (my character was impatient and selfish and only stopped herself because of his disapproval.)  Up until the end, she was a better person for knowing Anders. I really have to credit the writers for adding so many layers to that relationship, and to him as a character.

With Fenris, on my first playthrough our relationship was strictly platonic, and I got him to 100 percent rivalry pretty fast.  Yet it was one of my favorite relationships in the game, because I really did feel that I got to know him, probably even better than some other characters like Aveline and Varric who were high on the friendship side, if not maxed.  In our last conversation, I felt that we had come to have mutual respect for each other, if not friendship.

Like I said earlier, plenty of stuff there for the player to take away from these characters, whether you romance them or not.  They can't all be Disney Princes.

LONG ago.

But on the subject of Fenris. Not saying the character would be badly written...just not my cup of tea. Which is the point I believe. My fiancé finds him funny though. He likes to yell at my mage. A lot. Fenris that is...I'm off to bed.

Seriously, BioWare?

Based on my experience with the game so far (and I am admittedly only a little ways into Act 2, though I have read some spoilers about what happens w/ some characters), I have to assume EA's new character consultants are a 14 year old Twilight fangirl (who was asked to describe, in detail, every adolescent romantic fantasy she ever had since she was 13 in reference to Fenris, Anders, and Sebastian) and a 17 year old boy (whose only contributions were "bigger boobs - no BIGGER" and "make Isabella's skirt shorter - no SHORTER").  The PC's sibling is not around long enough to have required much work (though someone's got brother issues, apparently). Merrill was some programmer's mother's idea, presumably, and I can only surmise that the one character that you let a veteran adult writer have any say in was Varric (how did that one slip by?).

So I ask again - SERIOUSLY, BioWare?

I am a 39-year-old adult female gamer.  I am a professional, as is my husband, and I think I am about as ideal a consumer as you can have. I have enough disposable income that I can afford to not only buy your games, but to buy the accessories and add-ons that go with them.  I have been gaming for a long time (I played Scott Adams text adventures  on cassette - cassette, people!) and I am a huge fan - which means that I also don't just buy the regular edition, I buy the collector's/special/signature edition.  As a rule (current rant aside) I do not clog your boards with posts - profane complaints about a game's release date or  gripes about the cost / hour of gameplay etc.  I just buy your games, register them, buy your expansions, buy your guides, buy your OTHER expansions - and then buy your next title.

In return for my faithful and patient patronage, you give me......what?  An elf so ridiculously emo that your other NPCs mock him for it?  A tortured mage terrorist whose jokes wore thin in Awakenings?  A sanctimonious choir boy who took a vow of chastity that he takes seriously - even though he's the last of his line (which he says, repeatedly)?   With all the angst floating aroud, I am frankly surprised you did not add my own sibling to the list of eligible suitors!

The one male character who is mildly interesting - Varric - is not even a romantic option.  What is WRONG with you?

I am happily married, and I am not looking for in-game virtual/digital romance to fill some emotional void in my life.  But I enjoy good storytelling (I am a writer and a writing instructor) and this is NOT it.  Not all or, I hope, even MOST, of your female gamers are Twilight fans who want to rescue some hoplelessly damaged soul or agonize over the tragedy of courtly love.  Whoever was in charge of the characters in Origins did a much better job.  If the same dude/gal was in charge of the chars here, they phoned it in (or had just watched New Moon for the 100th time or something).

And, here's the weird part - I don't get why you thought this brooding collection of adolescent icons would appeal to your fan base.  Males 18-35 are still probably your biggest consumer group, and I don't see them being all gung ho about Anders or Fenris.  "Who is your favorite PC?"  "I love that emo barefoot elf and his huge sword!"  "Me? I <3 Anders - he's so tortured and mysterious!"  Now, I fully acknolwedge that Fenris' ginormous blades have a cool factor and that Anders is by far the best healer in the game - but weapons and tactics aside, they are not pleasant characters to have around.  So why not make them more appealing?

So here's the long and short of it - You gave your male gamers Isabella (who I, as a heterosexual female, can comfortably say is 'hot') and Merrill (someone still likes the waif thing, right?). Aveline may appeal to some guys as well - I can't say.  You gave us women....sigh.  Last time the guys got Leliana and Morrigan (and Wynn, if you're into that sort of thing).  Last time women got Alistair and Zevran (but, thank heaven, not Oghren - I appreciate that). It was fair.  This time, the women got screw--, er shaft--, ehm - well, it wasn't quite a satisfying experience. Next time, how about showing your gamer gals a little more love?

Thanks,

Laura

You  know...I was going to stay stay the hell away from this thread, but having read the Twilight series, and played this game and being about the same as your admitted age, Dear Laura, and a woman and a writer and happily married, too, I respectfully disagree.

Fenris and Anders and Sebastian aren't remotely Twilight-esque.  They have REASONS for being "angsty" and "emo."  Last I checked the characters in Twilight only had the fact that they were teenagers as a reason.  Slavery does not a happy person make, nor does possession.  And big deal, Sebastian wants to wait till he's married  -- isn't that usually a good thing in a guy?

I think you should pick one and finish the game before you start throwing stones at the writers.

Thanks,

Sia.

I'm old enough not to like to give my age but let's just say I'm in your ball park. I'm also an adult professional, self employed business owner, enough disposable income to buy a lot of games. I loved the wounded-soul nature of Anders character. I was not offended by Isabela's appearance (if every female looked like that - like a DOA game - I would have been offended but not in this case as she was one of a variety of female types in the game) and I found her quite amusing. And I found Sebastian's innocence quite charming - naive but charming. Twilight... eh... fun in terms of "guilty pleasure" - even as someone who would prefer to watch History Channel documentaries over network television anyday. And I am also happily married, but I still thrive on the romances in these games because I get a more personal connection of the game through them, and I become more emotionally invested in the game. I love the LI as my Hawke, or as my Warden, not as myself. Of course, myself enjoys that feeling. Be married long enough and not every moment feels romantic or passionate, even in the most loving relationships. At any rate, I guess the point I wanted to make is that while you made a point of describing yourself I just wanted to say you still were just speaking for yourself, not grownup females in general. I respect your opinon as long as it's clear it is your own and not speaking for any group of gamers as a whole. And also... sorry but I couldn't stand Varric...

Seriously. Why is it that every character with any sort of angst automatically means Twilight. Edward is a whiny stalker vampire who has absolutely no reason to be so angsty. All he cares about is Bella and all he thinks about is Bella. Not to mention Bella is the same exact even further emo teenager. They complain about things that are not worth complaining about at all.

Fenris is a former slave who was branded in a godawful process and has lost all his memories. And he still isn't all that angsty about it. Not to mention he doesn't even like Hawke to begin with if he/she is a mage. And he has a purpose, he has a former master chasing him, he hates mages and doesn't want another place to end up like tevinter, and he's all about freeing slaves. He doesn't sit in the corner and sulk all the time and the only person he talks to about his experiences is Hawke.

And Anders is a tragic figure but not emo at all. He does say things like he will protect Hawke at all costs and it would drive him crazy to lose her, but that still doesn't stop him from completing his plans. And he's got a demon inside of him, so I'd say that's reason enough to be a little bit emotional.

Both characters have a reason to be incredibly angsty but they really aren't that bad. And both characters have more of a purpose outside of just being Hawke's love interest. They are very different from some emo vampire who is just upset because he sparkles in the sun.

Yes, seriously.

These are the characters we wanted to write. I recognize that not everyone's going to enjoy them, but you might want to avoid the implication that you're speaking on behalf of your entire gender or age group. Three of the five writers who worked on the game and indeed wrote some of the characters you dislike are both female and quite adult-- as I'm sure a large number of the people who enjoyed their writing.

If you didn't like them, then that's too bad. I'm sorry, and hopefully the next time we write something you'll find something more to your liking. But to assume that anyone who doesn't enjoy what you enjoy must be either immature or a horny idiot is more than slightly elitist. I hope you realize that.

^^This.  I'm a 32-year-old professional female with a disposable income.  And I loved my scrawny broody elf (thank you for that DG!  If I could kiss you, I would!).

I also was quite mesmorized by Isabella's boobs.

Part of the problem, at least for me, was the limited interaction allowed made getting to know the characters much harder - I can understand limiting major conversations some, but really 2 conversations every 3 years - I think I would have talked to my companions more than that. Some of the banters, particularly later in the game did flesh them out a lot more but they didn't have the same effect as a proper conversation would have.

.

I feel exactly the same way as you about the lack of conversations with your companions- especially the ones you romance. It's pretty hard to connect to your companions, or romantic partner, on an emotional level if you aren't able to interact with them more often.

I think Mr. Gaider said it best.

While Alistair will always be my favorite, I think the cast this time around did an excellent job of making me like all of them equally (whereas majority of my attention in DAO was only on Alistair).

I don't think the opening poster will respond back, but as "the perfect consumer", I'd like to ask how much of that "disposable income" do you actually put towards the company? Because having to spend and actually spending are two different things. How many copies of the Dragon Age games do you have? How many guide books, or official t-shirts, posters, or mini figures do you have?

But seriously, you said yourself you are only a little ways into Act 2. Try finishing the game. A little ways into Act 2 means you aren't that far and haven't been able to invest in much, let alone the characters. The fact that you went and spoiled yourself with the big details only makes it worse, because now you are metagaming.

Thanks, very good and entertaining reading. I believe you do writing stuff for your living.

Hopefully they keep hiring that 13 year old boy to tell what kind of boobs there should be. That said, Aveline is my favorite NPC by far.

I liked the story line, and I liked what I saw of the characters, although I know from reading the boards there is tons I missed. So, means may more playthroughs....and with the characters having more involved banter between them...this also means switching up how I play the game...I suffer from picking companions that fit well with my gameplay style and then never switching them out......and you miss a lot that way.

I hope you realize that.

classic. With styles as always.

I suddenly has a feeling that Varric was inspired by you Mr. Gaider.

I feel exactly the same way as you about the lack of conversations with your companions- especially the ones you romance. It's pretty hard to connect to your companions, or romantic partner, on an emotional level if you aren't able to interact with them more often.

Agreed. I really have little to say about the romances because they didn't really seem like romances, nor did I get to know them as romantic interests. I learned more about them from their party banter.

I found it easier to enjoy the character interactions when I accepted that all the romance options, both guys and gals, have an element of "extreme fantasy soap opera." Would I personally ever be attracted to a real-world equivalent of these characters? No...but that doesn't mean I cannot enjoy watching the story play out.

32 female, also happily married, with 6 month old twins!!

I agree, they are 'fantasy soap opera' caharcters but I do find that each has more depth to them than the origins one (just my opinion) and that the relationships are harder, and more rewarding to establish!

Would I ever be attracted to a real-world equivalent? Hell yes, would I be too scared by how messed up they are to do anything about it? Absolutley! But as you say I love watching the story play out annd at the end of the day it is a fantasy game!
