I ran the 1st game on Normal as a mage, and was a bit frustrated by the suckiness of Blood Magic and ended up speccing Spirit Healer--which meant pretty much standing around doing nothing (staff spam) while watching my party kill stuff.

I decided to try a 2-hander for my 2nd runthrough and let me tell you, it is like night and day in terms of "fun-ness."  Maybe I'm just a sucky mage, but I am having a blast playing my vanguard/reaver.  My party is me (2hander), Merril specced blood magic (how nice for her...) and primal, Anders as healbot/haster/elemental weapons/arcane shield (probably could have shared the load a bit with Merril but so far I am not suffering for it), and Sebastian.

Somewhere during the middle of act 2 I realized that it was almost too easy on Normal, since I was just prison raping everything, so I bumped it up to Hard.  Now the fights seem more challenging, or at least they aren't over within 5 seconds, and the bosses feel like a challenge (so far, the only one I have killed since going Hard was the dragon in the dank caves).

Another thing that has made a HUGE difference in the fun factor (i.e. not having to micomanage your underlings so you can concentrate on smashing stuff) is much better tactics.  I highly recommend taking a look at Sabresandiego's excellent guide http://social.biowar...5/index/6396096 for some tips on setting up tactics, even if you aren't trying to run Nightmare (screw that...).

Anyway, I just thought I would share.  If you, like me, were a little bit disappointed on your mage playthrough then give 2-hander a try.  You could always just "man up" and learn how to be a better mage, but I'm telling you:  whacking monsters with your huge sword while not having to worry about your party (very much) is very satisfying.  And when you just have to have that feeling of Blood Magic pwning, you can always just take control of Merril (the blood mage you can never be... lol).
