Alrighty, so many people know that using the Maker's Sigh (respec potion) on Hawke will lead to a bug where, upon saving and loading your game, you will be given back talents that you used to have. So basically, free talent points.

However, I think I found a way around this bug thanks to Joshua Stiksma (a dev). Last night Josh mentioned that the bug was actually related to the number of usable items in your inventory (potions, grenades, poisons, etc). The more of these in your inventory, the more of your talents you are given back. So, logically, if you have no usable items in your inventory, you should not get any extra talents!

I tried this myself last night and it appeared to work, but it will need further testing (eg: does it persist through mutliple sessions?) because I didn't have time.

So here's the jist of it:

1. Head home, and put ALL of your usable items (potions, grenades, poisons, etc) in your stash. You don't need to empty your entire inventory, just the Usable Items page. Keep ONE Maker's Sigh.
2. Save the game. Just incase.
3. Drink your potion, and respec your character.
4. Save your game in a NEW slot.
5. Load that game. Check your talents.
6. Retrieve all of your potions. At this point you should be good to go, but I would reccomend one more save/load just to make sure.

Tada!

If people are willing to test this out and post back here weather it worked or not (or if the bug comes back later on), that would be much appreciated. I really hope it works.

It's beyond me how they managed to screw this up. It worked perfectly in Awakenings.  I realize it's not the same game, but it should be fairly similar in execution.

Copy and paste, yo.

LOL...I wish it were that easy. Still stuns me how little people understand the troubles of coding. Your "copy and paste"  solution could lead to a possible recoding of the entire game. Nothing is simple as that in coding. Posted Image

It's always indeed. When you see what seemingly not related portion of the game affect another you imagine how much hair can be pulled, how many yelling, keyboards destructed and whimpering you can hear from the QA room when trying to debug stuff.

Debugger, you have a thankless job but know that you have some of us' respect.

I just tested this fix with two of my characters and it worked perfectly!

One character was a level 22 mage and the other was a level 10 warrior. In both cases I attempted to respec without the fix and I got the same bugs I always do. I then reloaded, tried your fix, and had no problems. Now I don't get all three specialisations, old abilities, or upgraded versions of abilities without the base.

This thread should be stickied until Bioware fixes the problem with a patch.

I am actually surprised that nobody has started flaming that they'd rather enjoy this bug while it lasts... I, for one, would like to thank Josh and MachDelta for finding this fix!

One would wonder how such a bug with main feature of DLC(pretty much the only thing worth buying in BE) even made it to release date?

I never had this problem. I didn't save and load right. I usually just keep playing. Never happened before Till I tested this out to be honest. So I was a little surprised to see this bug lol. Not that I'm gonna exploit it or whatever... Did just fine w/o it

Just when did free attribute points become a bad thing???

I call this a bug with benefits, no real need to do anything. I only feel a little disappointed that I didn't encounter this little bug when I used a Maker's Sigh.

The fact that this bug is often unavoidable and may cause problems later on does make it a problem. In my case, loading a saved game any time after respeccing would cause it to randomly add extra abilities and sometimes give me all 3 specialisations. It would even give me the upgraded version of an ability without the base form.

I know a lot people say that this isn't really a bad bug, but it does sort of break the leveling system and could cause the game to crash later on.

I don't think I encountered this bug.

My inventory was pretty much empty, I had potions though. The book worked as intended and I didn't get any of my old talents back (I realized at the end of the game that I was missing a really strong passive ability which I had gotten before >_>)

There was actually a similar bug in Awakening. I forgot exactly how it was. Either you got an extra skill or an extra talent point, but only if you had imported a character.

I am one of those strange people who prefer to play games as they were intended. I will cheat if I'm already sick of a game and just want to try something crazy. But I don't want to use cheats of any kind on a serious playthrough.

Some things are though, but silly programmers make them difficult. I find programming usually gets harder the lazier I get.

I wrote one short test program once. It was so complicated and poorly written that when I came back from a short coffee break I couldn't understand how it worked anymore. But it seemed to work and went on to become quite infamous locally. So proud!

This reminds me of a DAO mod (Boots of Speed) that accidentally gave you double attribute points on level-up.

Yep, there's some serious truth going on there MachDelta.

Anyway, back on topic. I haven't yet experienced a bug with Maker's Sigh. But removing potions doesn't seem like a particularly drastic workaround. So thanks, I'll remember that if I run into problems.

I am glad that I didn't experience this bug even though I gobbled down Maker's Sighs like M&Ms in my Rogue playthrough. Thanks for the information though I'll make sure to keep a mental note of this in case it crops up through my succeeding runs. As termokanden pointed out I'd like to be able to experience the game's challenges as they were intended to be, although the attack speed bug kinda got in my way along the way.

I have experienced a significant drawback to "exploiting" this bug. I tried some experimentation regarding maxing ability points and the like. The first major drawback was that my critical strike damage decreased with every potion I took. I eventually had -50% critical strike damage (cunning attribute modifies), that wouldnt even raise with items or talents.

Additionally, if one does choose to exploit this bug for additional skill points, I discovered if your total number of skill points exceeds the total number of all skills, then you can never leave the level up screen with any skills, since exiting resets your skills to having no skill points assigned.

I didn't notice any other negative impacts to attribute provided bonuses, but I believe it is highly probable that exploiting the makers sigh bug will ruin behind the scene game calculations.

Exploit with care.

EDIT:

After reading other posts about bugs and such, I believe maker's sigh triggers the bug discussed here.  I unequipped all of my gear manually then used the potion and experienced a decreased amount of critical strike damage leak.  It appears using makers sigh may create a "leak" with any attribute or stat that an item or skill is supposed to enhance.
