Think I ran into this repecing Hawke tonight.

Wound up with the icons for Stealth and Ambush lit up. Neither seems to work however. Haven't noticed anything else wonky going on though yet <crosses fingers>

Wonder if they'll be able to fix this in pre-existing saves.

I tried this out with a very early save, before the first time i used the Maker's Sigh on my warrior. Going from 2H to SnS.

Works perfectly.

Now im my latest save I've used the potion twice. so i have an extra 4 ability points.
This is what im wondering, as this fix still doesnt remove the "illegal" extra skill points. Is it better to just play from a save which is about 6-7 hours worth of play behind.

Or to use the console commands to delete 4 abilities (what im worried about with this, is that since ive used the potion twice so far. once i delete the extra abilities, and then use this method for remaining respecs. will those extra abilities/specializations resurface later on and force me to keep deleting the extra skills)

seems more logical to just play from an earlier save before the use of the potion and use this method from then on. however, im not sure if im too amped to replay 6-7 hours.

No chance.

Between this and the other bugs that permagimp your character there is no reason to even play until they patch this mess up.

I am one of those strange people who prefer to play games as they were intended. I will cheat if I'm already sick of a game and just want to try something crazy. But I don't want to use cheats of any kind on a serious playthrough.

I have gotten into a habit with BioWare games.  I play the first time with no guides, spoilers (if I can help it) or cheats of any kind.  Won't even use respect items like the maker's sigh unless I completely screw something up.

Then I cheat my butt off for a few plays-through, read all about the hidden stuff, etc.  I make sure I've seen everything there is to see in the game.  Then I take a break for a couple of months, and take the DLC as it comes.

Then I go through again for a final play-through after the last of the DLC is released to make sure I did everything "right," the way I want my save to be for the sequel.  No cheats for the final run.

Too bad you can't get a third specialization point with it.

I have all 3 specializations now lol. I had 2 at lvl 13 and then sometime later a 3rd opened up, lol

This doesn't work. I mean, once a character already has the extra points on him this does nothing to fix that. The only way I see this working is in conjunction with a console command to get rid of all the extra points, and then using this technique to prevent any further corruption of the file. Other than that I'll have to start my entire game over; I was using those potions even in chapter 1. Thanks Bioware.

I got hit with this bug. I wasn't paying attention when i drank the potion, and forgot to disable sustained mode Lacerate, cause i didn't want it. When i respec, it is still highlighted in the abilities, shows the small Lacerate icon on the bottom right, and is using what ever percent of stamina is in the ability desciption.

Would using the console command code of removetalent fix this? Or will i run into more trouble? Any idea if Bioware is aware or planning on fixing this issue?

*EDIT 3/19*
Was unable to use the removetalent code to get rid of Lacerate. Hopefully patch will arrive soon.

Believe it or not, coding isn't actually that difficult. I'm not sure how they ended up with a variable for points based on usable items.

I'm really shocked they managed to release a game with this many glitches. There are glitches for infinite money, armor, exp, and ability/spec points on all systems. I bet a few programming/testing positions will be opening up at Bioware soon.

RefundPoints = CharacterLevel;
RefundSpecializationPoints = (int) (CharacterLevel/14); // I knew that 4 year degree would come in handy.

*tiny bump.
Im also having problems with these respec potions.

I bought thouse exstra talent and stat potions, however when i use makers sigh to respec it dosnt add back the exstra talents nor the stats i got off thouse potions. It only add normal level stats, so thats alot of gold and exstra stats down the drain!.  =(

Just got hit with this bug. I'm deep into Act 2. Was thankful for this thread (and it works) but it doesn't help with the 3 extra ability points I now have and can't get rid of. Thanks for the help Josh and MachDelta, but it looks like I have to restart Act 2 anyway.

Between the brokenness of Awakenings, Mass Effect 2 on PS3 and now Dragon Age 2 (I also have the Isabella and Sebastian friendship bugs and the various Anders tactics bugs), I seriously have to ask: Is there any QA testing happening at EA these days?

EDIT: At least they make that beginning act auto-save, but man, playing this game while keeping a constant eye out for crippling bugs is exhausting. Might just wait for a patch; at least I'll be able to enjoy myself confident that the game is actually working.

Okay so the bug is getting extra attribute points. Is that the only problem? Because i can sure as hell live with that.

Were I a cheating man, I'd be happy too. You can easily exploit this to learn every ability available to you.

I'd rather play the game as it was intended to be balanced, though. Time to do all of Act 2 over again.

Also should point out that the bug was delayed in my case. After respeccing, I continued to save/load several times with no issue. But for some reason it just hit me when I started the game up today.

EDIT: And in light of that, maybe I do have to start a new game. I've used several Maker's Sighs in the past (during Act 1), so if the bug can be delayed, it could still strike at any time in Act 2 or 3 even if I never use another Maker's Sigh. Good thing I like this game so much (when it's working).

Well it isn't *quite* that simple - that doesn't account for tomes etc the player has acquired, nor any special quest rewards that give stats/abilities. If those aren't actually tracked separately then it might be impossible to recalculate formulaicly.  Specialisation points are easy enough, but as you get them at 7 and 14 and you only get the 2, it might be easier to just increment a counter on clevel>=7 and >=14.  CLevel/14 obviously won't work ;)

Ability points, not attribute points.

I only got around to fixing this bug after my rogue turned into a sloth. For those afflicted, I used the DAO save game editor to reset my speed. I do have a few questions for anyone else who has a rogue as I understand that passives still give bugs e.g. the +25% from Pinpoint Stikes turns into a -25% every time you respecialize, and I respecialized a lot.

First question is just a general question that wasn't really solved with my google searches. 30 tabs open and not a single answer satisfies. Is the number of ability points you have equal to your level plus the tomes that you found, and if so, is that level + 3?

My second question is in regards to the crit damage modifier. Mines about 250% at lvl 22 with champion gear, Assassin, Devious Harm, and Pinpoint Strikes, and about 56 points in Cunning. Does this sound about ball park to those who haven't used maker's sigh? The DAO save game editor says I have a modifier of 35, 10 + 25 from respective abilities, but I'd like to be sure.

Thanks for any help.

You can use the DAO savegame editor to reset your speed.

Also, thanks for the info.

That's not where the problem is, unfortunately. One of the devs said that it was table corruption when saving (and subsequently loading) games. Hence why you don't actually get the bug until you've saved and reloaded your character. Apparently the same bug is causing lots of different effects, including (supposedly) the Thumbs Up bug.

Now i'm not what I would consider an experienced programmer, but i've had enough dealings with tables, lists, multi-dimensional arrays, matrices, et all to know that most people hate working with them. Sometimes I look at them and I think they're more voodoo than logic.

You just need the luck that one of the talents you get back is in a specilization, Therefor you keep the spec points with the game thinking you have the spec already if you have a talent in it.

I don't use this bug anymore since I figured out how to give any number of points, specs, etc in the save editor : / ... Not sure if I want to add blood mage to my mage .. for story reasons ..

I realized today that I'm suffering from this bug. I was unable to fix it by following the OP's guidelines. Anyone have a guide for how to fix this through console or some kind of file editor. I'm currently a level 15 mage with 23 ability points. I like spells as much as the next mage, but this seems like too much of an advantage. Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem, only I haven't respecced again for the extra points so I have the Pyromancer passive even though I didn't get it. As long as I don't respec again at this point it shouldn't make a difference, but it's really annoying.

Also, does this affect companion friendship/rivalry passives?
