After playing a mostly sarcastic (female) Hawke, I can savely say she had some very funny lines that made me laugh - and I don't laugh out loud that often when playing a game. Beyond that there was tons of funny banter, as well as some nice quests, Avelines comes to mind.

Might not be everyones kind of humor, I guess, but it felt far more natural and genuine in DA2, compared to the somewhat forced DA2 humor. However, since I disliked Oghren, I'm likely biased.

I don't know, I think it depends a lot on your party makeup on at least some of the quests. At one point on Avaline's long road quest Isabella tells her something like "if you don't go get that man this instant I swear I'll bed him myself!". I also had Merrill in this group and she didn't get why Avaline needed a dowery for at first then she's like ohh. I thought this whole quest was hilarious.

Anders was funny in DAA but isn't really in DA2. Oghren had his moments in DAO, had character growth in DAO and was a pathetic shell of a drunk in DAA. It's hard to extrapolate from those two instances but it's as though Bioware really hates to carry the same companion from one fantasy game to another. The change to Aribeth was explainable due to Obsidian <> Bioware, but ...

And currently Aveline + Merrill + Isabela seems to equal pure banter win. Mix in Varic from time to time and the funny doesn't seem to stop.

I'm convinced Anders was schizophrenic. sometimes he'd be funny... then he'd go cry in a corner over how much it sucked being an abomination, then he'd hop onto a soap box and try to make me care about "the plight of the mages" then he'd go back to making 1 wisecrack per act... repeat.. you have Anders' character in DA2.. sad.

I don't think I can make over 100 whole videos for YouTube for my "Best Party (banter)" series like I could with Origins (and other very funny moments while still left some out), but the humor is still there... much smaller doses though.

The followers in this game are some of the most charming and funny I've encounter so far in any Bioware game. Even Hawke made me laugh.

You're kidding, right? Scenes like Hawke rushing into the middle of an argument between Avaline and Isabela asking breathlessly "are there any seats left?" was a comedy gem. The banter was almost always funny; Hawke's one sided pun about the Wounded Coast was adorable.

For me, I'd say DA2 was no less humorous - and sometimes more so - than its predecessor.

I love the humour in this game - Isabela and Merrill, Aveline and Varric, snarky Hawke, the whole of Aveline's personal quest. I've laughed way more in this game than in Origins and I've only just started Act 3. Alistair and Shale were the only two characters who made me laugh much in Origins, but in DA2 everyone has their moments. Merrill is particularly good comic value.

DA 2 humor is good but really, anyone saying that laughed more with this game than with Origins clearly have not replayed Origins nearly as much as it would be needed to explore all possibilities.

Lucky for those, they are all youtubed:

The cheating chanter, Sten stealing cookies from a child, the wise highwaymen raider, Morrigan playing nice in the fade and Oghren's 100 killer moments. Also in Awakening, Oghren steals it all either with Anders or with Sigrun. All topped by Leliana's forbidden fruit, of course!

I can't speak for your run OP, but I've been laughing my arse off just as much in DA2 as I did in Origins. And both, substantially more than Awakening. There have been equal number of memorable lines as there were in Origins.

Of course the fun is doubled if you're playing Witty Hawke. Witty Hawke is the 'Alistair/Anders' of the game. Which is odd, since the latter was there.

I think anyone saying they haven't laughed as much as orgins has not explored all the possibilities in this game. Because really, this game is not lacking whatsoever. The only real difference is that the funny is quicker to get rolling in Origins. Mostly due to comedy in the starter sequences and early Alistair aquisition.

Varric: What do you do in that mansion all day?
Fenris: Dance
Varric: What?!
Fenris: I run from room to room and choreograph routines.

I prefer DA2 "humor". Maybe it's that the companions were doing and saying things my real life friend would do in the same context...

DAO always felt flat to me.

I loved that. I also loved funny Hawke during one of Fenris' big rants.

Fenris (screaming loudly): What good has magic EVER brought?

Looks over to Mage Hawke who just stands there looking him with a raised eyebrow.

Fenris (suddenly calm): Oh... I... well...

It was played seriously, but Hawke's expression of "O RLY?" was priceless. Image IPB

I feel that there is much more humorous banter in DA2. Every combination of character produces banter and it is constant. DA:O would go for whole sequences with nary a quip - but DA2 has it constantly and I'm yet to find a combination of characters that doesn't produce something every time I enter a location.

Well, on my first playthrough I kept Merrill in my party 99% of the time - she frequently made me laugh or smile.

Here's an example exchange:

  • Merrill: How did you learn swording?
  • Carver: Swording?
  • Merrill: Those things you do with the sword. It looks tricky. Was it hard to learn?
  • Carver: Takes a lot of practice.
  • Merrill: Well, you seem good at it. I bet one day you'll be best sworder in Kirkwall.
  • carver: Merrill...
  • Merrill: I said something wrong again didin't I? Maybe I'll just stop talking.

Anything with Varric..

ANYTHING.

Anders: I've always wondered, why is every surface dwarf a merchant or a smith?
Varric: You left out criminals and hired muscle.
Anders: They don't count.
Varric: We dwarves are drawn to shiny objects, sort of like Magpies, but with business sense.
Anders: You're kidding.
Varric: Of course I am. We come to the surface with the skills our ancestors had, Blondie. You think there's a tradition of Dwarf woodcutters in Orzammar? Bee keepers? Sailors?
Anders: Well, there could be mushroom growers and nug wranglers.
Varric: Orzammar will never let those people go topside. Too vital. Also, embarrassing

Varric: So, what do you do, Aveline?
Aveline: You know I'm a guard. Why are you asking?
Varric: I mean in your off-duty hours. You've heard of it, I hope.
Aveline: These are my off-duty hours.
Varric: And the trend of you scaring the ****** out of me continues

Varric: You know, Junior, it's eerie how much of a resemblance there is between you two.
Carver: He/she's my brother/sister, of course there's a resemblance.
Varric: Ooh, you thought I meant Hawke. I was talking about Gamlen.
Carver: Maker, I hate you dwarf.
───────
Varric: You know you still owe me five sovereigns, elf.
Fenris: I'm good for it.
Varric: So, you think you can win the coin from Isabela? Good luck with that./ So you're going to borrow it from Hawke(if romanced)
Varric: Coming to the Hanged Man for Wicked Grace later?
Fenris: Never miss it.

Isabela: Come to me, and I'll take you to places you've never been.
Varric: Isabela...are you talking to Bianca?
Isabela: I think she deserves to feel a woman's touch on her trigger, don't you?
Varric: Bianca responds to my touch. She'd never give it up for you.
Isabela: That's what they always say, and I always prove them wrong.
Varric: Stop it. You're confusing her. And me.
───────

Merrill: Thank you very much for the help earlier Varric.
Varric: You made it back to the Alienage in one piece then?
Merrill: I don't know how I wound up in Darktown. There are just too many corners in Kirkwall.
Varric: Still got that ball of twine?
Merrill: I left it at my house. Don't worry. I won't get lost while we're following Hawke.
Varric: Bring it next time, Daisy. Just in case. (D'awwww)

Sebastian: "I - Hawke! We were just talking about you."
Hawke: "Carry on. I love to eavesdrop."
Varric: "'Hawke said, sarcastically.'"
Hawke: "You know, I hate it when you do that."
Varric: "'Hawke muttered, in an angry aside to the dwarf...'"

As I said. ANYTHING.

Anything with Isabela was equally funny. As was anything with 'Witty' Hawke. Since that was most of my usual team, nearly everything was a great time. Sure we were all rogues. But rogues have more fun.

Except Sebastian. He has vows you know. (But his story leads to one incredibly priceless moment with Isabela)

Yeah.

Something about the humor was different, but this game still had plenty of laughs.

Got to get around to trying witty/sarcastic Hawke though, I bet that'll be great.

Yeah, I felt the humor was pretty much waiting in allies and ambushing you from rooftops the entire time. Much like the combat encounters.
