I've had this probably here and there where my mage is unable to target an enemy and whne I try to attack, he just spins his staff. Hell, I have to use AoE spells just to attack. Luckily it's only happens for thirty seconds and then my mage can attack again.

I had a similar problem myself. I think it has more to do with the targeting system than any real bugs, and usually found bringing up the radial menu and targeting from there worked for me.

Don't get me wrong you could well be experiencing a bug however that worked for me during my playthrough. Hope it helped.

Yeah, I get this a lot too. It's like the enemies are right there, attack you idiot! I too think its a targeting issue but its still annoying.

I've had something like this. Sometimes my mage just won't attack anything, but that's sort of a targeting issue solved by radial wheel. The real issue for me is when I use gravatic ring. 80% of the time after I cast it, I can't attack (staff spinning). It's not a targeting thing, because even when I select a spell to cast on a particular enemy it takes forever to get going (4 sec). Annoying.

I have seen this numerous times with Merrill. After I have her cast a spell, I'll issue a few orders to the rest of the party. When I switch back to her she will go through one staff twirl animation before she will cast the next spell. I'm not sure if the switching back and forth has anything to do with it, or if I simply notice it then because that's how I play. Not a huge deal I suppose, but a few seconds can really matter in some of the tougher fights.

I've had this problem almost every battle with my mage. It's very annoying. Does anyone know of a fix?

I've had this problem with my rogue - A LOT. From what I've noticed, it happens most often after I've used my miasma attack and have "stunned" a set of enemies. For whatever reason, these enemies become untargetable by me and I just sit there spinning my blades.

It's at the point where I've stopped using he bomb....

Just switch to another character and back to fix it.

I'll try that Toby, thanks.

The twirling staff animation is for when the enemy currently targeted is out of range. From the looks of the reports here some spells/talents are causing the targeting to fail for a short time. Hopefully Bioware are aware of this issue and are currently fixing it

^ Agreed.

Though I don't think it's a bug at all, when it occurs with normal attacks. I experienced it a fair few times with Mages, but that was usually after I'd just killed someone (often close by), and I hadn't properly 'aimed' at a new target. After I noticed this it barely happened again, and when it did, it was my fault.

I'm on 360, and I see this after my mage uses an AoE that kills the target. Cannot target anyone else for a while, kinda frustrating.

Have you tried bringing up the radial menu? this usually lets you target something and sets a waypoint for it if it is too far away.

I usually experience this after using a wide area spell (eg, Fireball spell), when selecting the area of effect instead of highlighting all enemies it highlights all enemies/items/doors resulting in an inability to attack. I find opening the map or pausing the game helps with this problem.
Rouges using bombs and stuff usually get affected by this too, not noticed any affect for the warrior class.
Hope this helps :)

I get around this by using the radial menu also. But you don't even need to target with it, just pull the trigger so it starts to come up and let the trigger go and you should be back in business. Annoying bug though.

yeah i see this happen to but way i got around it to manual target with right or left on the d pad and it i think only happens vs rogues b/c of the bombs they use maybe and when target out of range..and how some said that other mage in party only spin there staff idk could be the attack pattern there set on
