Is it just me, or do the Greatsword-type weapons attack faster than the Battleaxe or Maul-type weapons?

yes they do, thats the advantage of using a sword.
But usually Mauls have +10% physical damage stats.
And Axes have +Critical chance stats.

Huh. So I have to choose. I've been restricting myself to Greatswords because I like the speed (and Whirlwind with a Greatsword makes the most sense), but I may have to switch over to axes.

There are some 2 hand swords later in the game that have a plus critical chance modifier on them later in the game.
I'm using the Potency sword in Act 2 which you get from the Fool Gold quest, it has a +6% Critcial chance and +14% Damage in a sword, its pretty sweet.
