First, where's the search option in these forums? Was it another DA:O feature that got removed from DA2? *eg*

Now, I'm pretty completionist and about to finish act 1 NM for the first time. I managed to gather 45 sovereigns after spending almost that much in 2 extra talents items and there's nothing else to do but to accept or decline that little dwarf frakker that wants only 100% on his loan.

Can I screw him over later? Why can't he loan just what I need to complete the bounty? Can I get 5 sovereigns anywhere else? Can any of you lend me 5 sovereigns and I'll gladly pay 100% interest on that asap?

You can refuse to pay him later and then kill him when he attempts to take his money back by force.

The loan shark is the best option. I didn't see the Spell Tome at Hubert's shop until I'd already spent too much money to afford both it and the Deep Roads trip, but I didn't want to betray Bertrand. Silly me, thinking that decision would have repercussions... lol. I wound up with like... 15k... when I needed about 21k, PLUS, since I didn't see the Tome, I'd already bought a more expensive version from the Black Emporium! One that would be there regardless of how long I waited.

Well whatever. In the end, losing 1 extra spell didn't matter.

I'm pretty sure I did all sidequests and collected all loot. I bought both tome and elixir for extra talents at 21g each plus a nice 3g plate 'cause I can't stand how ugly Blood Dragon Armor looks! =) And I had to spent a quite a bit on potions because NM is tough. I'm pretty sure in lower diff's it would have been a breeze to have the gold just by saving on potions but it's all right. I got the loan and let's see how it goes... I might even pay the guy... or not!
