It seems to be going well, I'm on level 6 with a 1:1 Str:Cun, Turn the blade, Heroic Aura and a couple of minor +defense accessories he's got a 53/33/13% defense rating. Next level I'll be able to take Lyrium Ghost for a whopping 73% rating against standard enemies, with his AoE attacks he's burning through normal enemies.

But I was wondering, how well does defense scale as you level up? If I keep on boosting Defense by 1.5 every level should I expect his defense rating to rise, break even or drop?

Cunning tanks work fine, I ran my first playthrough as 2h Hawke on nightmare. It's shortcomings will be that activated abilities don't miss, which is the majority of what bosses use(and what makes elite assassins/commanders at all scary). You can stand in the fray of however many critters/normals you want, with the occasional elite smacking you, but you'll still be better off physically dodging boss attacks.

I ran roughly 1.3:1:1 STR/CUN/CON. Ended with 42/36/32, with a few random points into WIL in the end. With just Turn the Blade, Arcane Shield, and Heroic Aura, plus defense runes, one valiance rune (+7 all att.), and a smattering of defense jewelry, my Hawke was running 80/75/55. Fenris could get the same WITHOUT TtB, or more if you want to sustain it (my Hawke only had TtB for sustains).

There is a certain point (36 Cunning seemed the best as far as attributes went) that you'll gain no more than 1% per Cunning/chunk of defense rating. My stats and gear seemed right for me anyway, as I was still dishing out 3k Mighty Blows, 500 Smites, etc.

I found Fenris did fine with just Lyrium Ghost, but I can see the potential in boosting cunning and can see that being usefull. I thought of doing so on my first playthough but my character was more the tank so I focused on making Fenris MDPS for when Isabela wasnt available or when I was doing his quests. With lyrium ghost and good constitution he seemed to be durable enough. I will probably experiment with cunning on Fenris next playthough tho, sounds interesting

Cunning sucks on nightmare. It doesnt protect against autohit abilities and aoe damage. constitution is the way to go.

^ Agreed. On Nightmare the things that keep killing you are those potion guzzling Assassins. Cunning is useless against them. Constitution is the only thing that works.

If being a stickler, in all honesty, all benefits from any stat beyond gear requirements are garbage anyway. My Hawke didn't survive assassin attacks because she had a high defense, nor did she die to them cause she was 50-100 health short. Top (read: only) reasons my Hawke died were due to slow animations, or slow player reaction.

Cunning vs. Constitution: Constitution is better against bosses...if you can't dodge worth ****. Cunning is better against mobs...again, if you can't dodge worth ****. Focus fire/CC trumps both against elites...if you can't dodge worth ****. =P Assassins? Silence, Petrify, Horror, Pommel Strike, etc. etc. Stealthed? Barrier/Stonewall. Backstabbed warrior? Bad build if you can't survive it either way, which enough CON for gear is enough.

I have no issue with either build. I'll even agree that a CON tank is > CUN tank when it comes to AI controlled tanks. But this forum is full of threads saying you 'must have/do this or will fail' when none of it's true.

Actually I am using this build on nightmare and it's going extremely well. The two hander abilities are all geared to taking out large groups so making Fenris virtually immune to these standard mobs makes him perfect for handling the "ANOTHER WAVE" tactics, while you keep the Lts and elites busy with CC and swapping threat around and if he does agro an Lt, Elite or an assassin who's just into stealth the upgraded Stone wall and Barrier skills work a charm.
