So I picked up the book, instead of destroying, or reading it, does this mean im kind of screwed?

After what I've read, the quest becomes broken unless you either read, or destroy all the books.

Any input on this would be great, and if there is any knowledge of a patch possibly fixing the issue.

Though I guess it's not a MAJOR deal since you just get a staff from it, though it seems like a nice enough staff.

Quick feedback would be appreciated since I feel tihs act is soon ending, and please keep this to this quest only, no spoilers or anything >:<

I have picked up all books and quest completed.

There is a few, some people usually miss the one in the chantry or the new cave opened at sundermount, and almost usually the cave open in the coast north part of the map..

I've visited all of those. Even the one a the vicount palace place or whatever the name of it is XD

I've heard you dont get the staff unless you destroy them all though

EDIT: After checking up on a walkthrough, apparently all you get for taking them, is money -.- God

EDIT2: Seems the game is broken? I've visited all the places where you can find the books, taken them all and quest is not finished. Granted I accidently sold one -.-

What a dumb quest. Well I guess the staff isnt that great of a loss. I just hate seeing that quest there, not being fnished, my OCD goes crazy

Yeah, that quest really sucks :(

I didn't even notice I had the quest when I encountered the first book and figured I should pick it up and the option to read or destroy would be saved for later.
Some time after, I notice the quest, find my second book, pick it up again and notice it ends up in the "junk" tab -_-
Which means I must have sold the first book by mistake and now the whole quest is broken...

If anyone with any bioware pull reads this, please, please fix this as I and probably a bunch more really would like the staff/finish the quest.

*Edit:
The quest doesn't really suck, I feel it's a very good quest where you get to make a choice on your gut feeling and reap the rewards later on. But remove the pick up option or change it so the book appears in the "other" tab instead of the "junk" tab so you can decide later.

I got F'd up pretty nice too... I actually read the first one, and took the other 3, since you can't read them more than once, and I only found out about the staff thingy after I read a walkthrough...

I don't even think you can read or destroy it after you pick it up.  It seems to behave just like any other junk item.  This kinda bums me out.  It's a very big problem in these games or anything with a choose-your-own adventure story - you can make the player choose any of the choices either with or without them knowing the consequences of the choice (or somewhere between the two, hinting and making them infer).  If they know the consequences it takes some of the activity away from the game, the suspense or interest in seeing events play out is diminished the more you know how they play out.  If you keep the player in the dark about the consequences of the choice, she's really not choosing at all (or at least she's not choosing any different then a magic eightball or coinflip) and she can't put her fancy human agency to work.

At least I wish I knew that taking the book was such a specific action and a dead-end that would keep the option of reading or destruction closed.  Your choices should've been presented as "read," destroy," or "take for selling" or something like that.  Or you could just call it "sell" in the dialouge and give you money for it right there.  It might conflict with the illusion of reality a bit but theres nothing you can do with the book but sell it anyways.

Out of the first set of books (five of them, I think), you can read one and get the stat boost (and some friendship/rivalry points depending on who's in your party), take or destroy. Taking any books just gives you a junk book you can't use.

To get the final book and summon the demon for the achievement, you have to destroy every book leading up to it. You can then read that book for half the stat boost of reading any of the other books, fight the demon, collect the goods.

It really is a poorly put together quest, imo. And my first playthrough I had no idea at all that taking the book made it junk. I mean, it's a book, why couldn't I just read it or burn it later?

Is it?  I may well stand corrected (screwed the quest up by taking and reading books earlyier my first playthrough so I never even got to the end of it the first time).  For some reason I thought it was either three or four points for the early book and only two for the last book.

For what it's worth, if you're looking for easy rivalry points ffor Merril, just keep her in your party while you destroy all the books.

Can you read all the books and still finish the quest?

No.  The only way to complete the quest is to destroy all the books that lead up to the last one (which you can read or destroy and still finish the quest).  And you can only read one anyway, after the first one you read you just get the destroy or take option.

I got the option to read all 4 of the ones I found, which was on my first mage character, and I read all four of them. Never could find that 5th one though
