I never had much luck with 2 rogues in my first playthough on my warrior hawke, but i'm on Playthrough #2 with a mage and i want to give it another go. I'm pretty comfortable with Varric but i need to work on Isabela. The poor thing was always on her back when i tried to user orginaly (in the wrong way) and need advise to help her stay alive. Group comp i'm planing on is Avaline, Mage Hawke, Varric and Isabella.
Suggestions on how to properly spec/tactic Isabela

What difficulty setting? Below Nightmare I would assume, still just asking.
Also let me preface this by saying I do not play Nightmare, as I prefer parties with characters I like instead of having to bring certain ones to survive certain fights. So if you want Nightmare, disregard most of this, as I have not tested any of this on Nightmare.
It depends what role you had in mind for your mage. If your mage is a pure built damage dealer, with a little support (elemental, primal, picking up the normal heal spell etc), then she can be built as control or off-tank just fine.
Her personal tree turns her into a defense-machine, Across the Bow is a good ability (micromanage this, tactics can't really be setup for full usage of it in my opinion) to get some pesky thing off your mage, or to give your tank breathing room. All Hands on Deck with the upgrade is a nice area effect stun to force monsters to stand still even longer in any sort of area effect spell you like (Tempest, even setting up Walking Bomb).
Dual Wield tree is the typical damage-increase tree, but that is basically the only thing the tree does, give more attacks.
Scoundrel tree would give you access to all sorts of neat tricks for controlling threat (Armistice, Goad, note that these skills have been reported not to work on console, as I don't play on console, I can't verify that myself) aswell as passive damage increase in Blindside, unless she's being a tank.
Subterfuge tree gives some survivability, Stealth is good for staying alive, but it does make the monsters attack other things, so if you want her to be a semi-tank, it might not be good idea.
Finally Sabotage tree was immense fun. Miasmic Flask isn't too bad and upgraded Rush is good way to get a swarm of things off your mage or Varric, or to simply kill a large amount of critters at once. Overpowering Fog upgrade for the Fatiguing Fog will turn Walking Bomb (or any other thing exploiting Disorient) into a mass destruction tool.
Hopefully that helped some, it's less about specific build, but more about tailoring her to suit your party. It's your party after all and I do not wish to tell you what you should do ^.^

Yeah not Nightmare, usually Hardcore with the occasional dips to normal for some bosses (high dragon comes to mind)

I did the same, mostly on Hard, occasionally on Normal. My party setup was different however (DW Rogue Hawke, Fenris, Isabela, Varric), so I had to build some tools for her to survive aswell. With a Mage Hawke, and thus usually having Heal spell, this can be skipped somewhat.
Also note that if you go deeper in the Creation tree and pick up Haste, then giving her Power from Specialist ability tree (possibly with upgrades) turns her into a stun locking machine. You can slaughter the occasional assassin or mage without them ever getting to move an inch.
I did not explore this concept too much however, as I could not stand Anders, and did not play a mage myself on the first run.

If it helps any, Isabella's Sashbuckler tree is a direct rip-off of Hawke's Duelist tree. Just in case that helps you in terms of tactics.
