The bolded part is key.
Not so sure about the gifts, as I'm fairly sure I missed a gift for him in Act 2 on my first run, and he still sided with me when I decided to side with the Mages (100% rivalry).

Thanks for adding to that, I was just "better safe than sorry". My first time I totally didn't realize telling him mages are slaves would make him stay and we just... BATTLED TO THE DEATH. It was sad.
