Seems like I just shouldn't use him in my nightmare run. Is he viable at all? Or is he just bad.

I'm using him a lot and he's pretty good. Just focus one something. For example, I mainly boost his strength and a bit of constitionen as well and abilitywise I pretty much only go for the 2hand tree with exception of pommel strike.
Later I'll go into the vanguard as well, as that one is beastly.
