Anders:
1. Has you go gather materials so that he can make a bomb in his terrorist plot to kill the only people intent on keeping the peace.
2. Uses you to distract the Grand Cleric so that he may plant the bomb--without your knowledge.
3. Starts a war throughout Thedas between mages, templars, the Chantry, and the hapless citizens caught in between.

Anders' Impact: the deaths of (hundreds of) thousands throughout Thedas.

Aveline:
Has you accompany her to the Arishok's stronghold and lend respectability to Kirkwall's desire to get back two hardened criminals awaiting justice who found a haven with the Qunari. But, those two "criminals" happen to be two gangly, diminutive elves who had no choice but to take the law into their own hands after their sister was raped by Kirkwall guards! Oh, and these "criminals" had earlier sought justice through legitimate means but got nowhere. This event turned out to be the 'straw that broke the camel's back' and started the Qunari aggression.

Aveline's Impact: the deaths of hundreds (or thousands) of civilians throughout Kirkwall.

Fenris:
1. When standing up against the massacre of the mages by the templars, he just abandons you and joins with the templars.
2. Uses you as bait and fodder so he can continue his campaign of revenge against his former master.

Fenris' Impact: minimal considering Anders/Aveline/Isabela; still a ****ty friend, though.

Isabela:
1. Steals a relic considered holy by the Qunari. This leads the Qunari to crash and then stay in Kirkwall--as they cannot leave without the artifact. (aside: if Sten could not return to the Arishok without his blade or else be killed on sight... what would happen to these Qunari who return without the holy relic?)
2. Conceals the fact that this relic was what was keeping the Qunari in Kirkwall in spite of all the political tension (and deaths) that came from the Qunari presence.
3. Instead of letting the city have the relic so the Qunari wouldn't destroy, she instead absconds the relic to give it to an Antivan thug to save her own hide.

Isabela's Impact: Full out war with the Qunari against the Free Marches (and the rest of Thedas) and all the (hundreds of) thousands of deaths that follow it.

Merrill:
1. The death of her clan's keeper.
2. The massacre Hawke was forced into that claimed the lives of every last one of her clan.

Merrill's Impact: Hundreds of deaths of a near extinct culture/species.

Varric & Dog:
Probably the only friends on whom Hawke could actually count to not stab him/her in the back.

The dog chewed on some of Hawke's furniture. Don't forget that.

Fenris didn't abandon me, despite siding with the mages (and you know, being one), and Merill had no fault in her death clan, the idiots just didn't want to listen. And well, I did feel a little betrayed since Anders didn't let me in on his plan, would've helped him and all. But him not telling you is something he does to protect you. So there you are, three have decent friends, and I didn't use any other companions, anyway :P

By the end of the game, Aveline is the only family Hawke has left.

LOL! True... and the fact that Merrill really doesn't want him on the bed with us....

I guess dwarves are a man's best friend?

The Hawke brothers made glory happen too. And Carver never stabbed my Hawke in the back either, despite incessant whining.

Still, they separate after the end of the game (Hawke and Aveline).

And that's why I like the game. The characters surprise you and not everything happens as planned.

There were a lot of heartbreaking moments in this game... but I liked it. I think it makes for a better game. People have their own agendas and can sometimes be blind to consequences.

Aveline never stabbed my PC in the back.

Carver was a jerk from soup to nuts. He constantly threw his anger and bitterness in my face, even after our mother died.

Sounds like you brought out the best in your companions.

You can't blame Aveline for that. She didn't seem to know the circumstances surrounding the murder, and she didn't know bringing Hawke would be a bad move.

Fenris may (or may not) come back, true. But the fact is, he did *not* stick by you at first. You have to remind him of his past life as a slave to have him come around and not try to kill you... again.

To be clear: I've a soft spot of Merrill--she's pure kryptonite for me. That said, was that stupid mirror worth those lives? :(

Hey that's true!  Carver and Hawke had an awesome reunion in the end... I don't know why I like Carver so much, considering he was a huge d-bag, but it felt great when he finally gave ground and admitted he was proud to be my brother.  "This is how we did it back in Ferelden!"  Heh heh... yeah screw that whole team, Carver is the only decent, completely trustworthy fellow around.

Aveline stuck by me all along, and what happened with the Arishok certainly wasn't her fault. Direct blame for that lies with Sister Petrice and Isabela in my opinion, As for Fenris, he returned to my side at the end and stood by me even though I was a mage. On the issue of Merrill: I avoided killing Merrill's clan (surprisingly). They apparently took me at my word and allowed me to take her with me, so my playthrough obviously went a little differently. She was not intentionally malicious or evil - she was foolish and made some bad decisions, believing that what she did was for the good of the Dalish (taking back a part of their history). Varric and Dog were awesome of course. As for Anders, he does try to protect you and warns you that you shouldn't get involved with him from the very start. What happened later was bad, but he's flawed and you know it. No, I certainly was PO'd with him after being backstabbed like that at the end, but he was also my LI so it was one of those complicated situations.

Wow you did terrible in your game. The only person that was not in my party at the end was Anders because I killed him.

If you're in a romance with fenris, or if you've got his friendship maxed, he stays, completely (did for me both times I sided with the mages).

And those death weren't Merills fault. I'm confident, with both me and anders around, we could've beaten the pride demon into submission. The keeper chose to interfere, and payed the price. Then the clan showed up, and didn't listen to my explanation of the matter. And according to personal business policy, people who don't listen get lit on fire. None of that was poor Merills responsibility.

Works with full rivalry too.

That's what friends are for. My Hawke who was best buds with everyone likes to think that if he were in their shoes he would of done the same thing and as such can't be mad at them. Well maybe not blow up a Chantry to prove a point but everything else sure.

This reminds me of the demons in the game always saying, "everyone has a price". All of them were pushed to the edge and Hawke was the one to try and keep them together making Hawke the best of all of them.

Personally, I liked that the companions all impacted the main story-line. In Origins, only Alistair, Morrigan and, to a lesser extent, Oghren were important for the story. And even so, their involvement was minimal. All the others were just there to help you kill stuff.

In DAII, you can take out Fenris and Merrill without impacting the plot. The other four, however, are intrinsically part of it, and taking them out would require a massive re-write.

And I loved that.

In my playthrough, all characters were alive and with me in the end (except for Anders; whom I had to mercy-kill to avoid a needless war between Kirkwall and Starkhaven). I even managed to go back and change the response to save the Dalish clan.

But, I was still left wondering: with friends like these, who needs enemies?

You don't have to slaughter the Dalish, if that's what you mean...

My Hawke is friends with them even though she wouldn't do half the crap they do. Her life is spend fixing other people's messes anyhow. Might as well do the same with her buddies.

In fairness, my Hawke is a pretty awful friend too.
Anders - Killed
Isabela - Would have killed if she had the opportunity.
Sebastian - Helped kill the grand cleric.
Merrill - Indulged her on the whole blood magic/mirror thing because she loved her, despite knowing in her heart of hearts that it was stupid and going to result in disaster.
Carver - Left behind from the expedition because Aveline was more useful and Anders was a warden.
