To be honest, I like it better this way. They say that everyone is the hero of their own story, and I like that all of the companions are shown to have their own faults, flaws, thoughts, opinions, feelings, agendas, goals, plans and so on that do not revolve entirely around the main character. They have their own lives and ambitions that they lead and pursue and if it happens to inconvenience or conflict with Hawke, then that's how it is, much like in real life.

Not to mention that--no offense--Hawke has plenty of opportunities to hurt or inconvenience those around him or her as well, intentionally or untintentionally, so to expect all of the companions to be perfectly agreeable to Hawke's every whim and action 100% of the time seems a bit one-sided. Though everyone has their own view of this, of course.

Personally, I think it makes for more interesting, enriching and realistic characters, stories and interactions to have most of the companions make mistakes, cause problems and even be selfish occasionally. It's much like how even the best-intentioned people in real life are, and it makes the world feel more vivid and real. (Anyone is free to disagree, of course, but that's how I view it.)

I always kill Merrills clan. That level of stupidity and accusation I always tell them to stand down.

I don't *like* doing it, but they have it coming with the amount of self righteous arrogance they have.

My warden already slaughtered the dalish in the blight, then Hawke killed off Merrills clan. the Dalish are cursed in my main playthrough :P

I still wish there was an option to tell both the templars and the mages to get the **** out and grow up and kick them both out of the city using the city guard and civilians :P but on a more serious note, Yeah they all had their bad parts to them, though I hate anders with a passion, I understand why he did it but man I have never ever let him live after that. If the world is going to servive this war specially after reading the last dragon age book we need less people like anders and meredith.

Worse than all your friends abandoning you in battle, leaving you to your death, crashing on some random planet only to copulate with your LI to populate a colony on said planet? :-P

Tsk. Cool it rambo, I'm just playing.

I wouldn't be in here if I didn't enjoy the DA games... and that goes for the ME games too.

I think in that matter DA2 did a pretty good job. No ordinary/normal person is without flaws. We all have our good and bad sides. Allthough some are more dominant then the other. The writers in my opinion tried to make the companions "real" people. I can apreciate that.
What one person may see as wrong another may seem as right when a companion reacts or acts on a situation. It's all a matter of perspective.

Aww, I liked the party members in DA2. Because of the references to them hanging out I got the feeling they really were a group of friends. Yes, they have their flaws and get Hake in trouble, but part of being a good friend is helping to work things out.

Varric is a great friend, no question. Aveline is also a wonderful friend who is the only one besides your LI to get a conversation to comfort you about Leandra. Her job is to uphold the law, and that’s what she does.  Fenris asking for help so he won’t get enslaved again hardly makes him a “bad friend”—if Hawke refuses, then he’s the one who’s a s****y friend. And he only betrays you if you don’t max the friend/rivalry meter. Isabela didn’t intend to start a war, and she does come back if you’re a good enough friend/rival. I agree that she should have told Hawke ahead of time, but to do so, I feel, would go against Isabela’s character (not that it makes what she did right). Merrill’s a good, sweet friend who does a lot of dumb things. Part of being a friend is helping her get through it. Sebastian is also a good friend, who always has your back unless you let the killer of his foster family walk away free. He also is the only one to suggest that Hawke becomes Viscount, which is a plot point I really wish was followed upon in the main game. Anders is the only one I would consider to be a bad friend. There’s the obvious one of making you an unknowing participant in a plot to blow up a house of worship, but then he also has the balls to try to guilt you into it if you express hesitation. My favorite part though is before that when he complains about your choice of LI. If you’re with Fenris, he compares him to a dog and if you’re with Merrill, he says she will always choose a demon over you (oh, the irony).

And well, I did feel a little betrayed since Anders didn't let me in on his plan, would've helped him and all. But him not telling you is something he does to protect you.

This isn't the first time I've heard that Anders doesn't tell Hawke to "protect him," and it completely baffles my mind.  How could refusing to tell his plan possibly protect Hawke? If you want to protect someone you don't make them an accomplice in a terrorist plot. At least if he did tell Hawke then Hawke would have the chance to get whatever he needs to escape Kirkwall.

Re: OP's version of Anders.  Agreed.  What Anders did was pretty messed up.

Re: OP's version of Aveline.  Disagreed.  Aveline was, in my opinion, those two elves best shot at a fair trial.  Furthermore letting the elves stay with the Qunari unfortunate as their case might have been (might have being the operative words.  We don't know for sure that they're not lying) sets a bad precident.  It allows a legal loophole for people who commit crime and decide that their just going to join the Qunari to escape justice.

Re: OP's version of Fenris:  Eh...I've actually managed to devolope enough friendship with him in one game for him to trust me.  Regarding his using you...well he wasn't really your friend at that point.

Re: OP's version of Isabella:  Fair points.  I give her a bit of leeway because...well because (a) she slept with my character and didn't expect him to call her the next day, (B) she eventually did the right thing, and © I'm not totally sure I wouldn't have done the same thing in her place.  It's easy to say I wouldn't, but no one really knows until they're faced with the real situation.

Re: OP's version of Merrill.  Slaughtering the entire clan is easily avoided, actually.  Plus Merethari's has some of her own blood on her own hands as well.

Re: OP's version of Varric: Varric rocks.  But I'm not sure I'd buy a used car from him.

Re: OP's version of the dog:  The dog is going to be the new Viscount of Kirkwall...he's that cool.

You can't blame Aveline for that. She didn't seem to know the circumstances surrounding the murder, and she didn't know bringing Hawke would be a bad move.

It always strikes me as the Tabris origin all over again... :crying:

I like that your companions have their own agendas and issues. More realistic. Having everyone be all pure and loyal like Sam was to Frodo is a bit ridiculous. Like in the real world, other than family (Bethany), how many people to you trust to be totally loyal to you? That number is small for me.

This is better than back in the day when your party members were all controlled by you and you can do whatever you want to them without question.
