Put as much detail into it as you like, I just thought it would be fun to see the various ways in which people play the game. I'll try to keep mine simple:

For me it's kinda simple. My party composition is as follows:
Hawke - Rogue
Fenris - 2h sword
Aveline - Tank
Anders  - Utility / heal

I typically explore with Fenris first, since most random fights can be almost soloed with him alone. Party follow mode is always on and the second a fight starts, I turn it off to make sure no-one gets any smart ideas. Hawke and Anders stay way back, Aveline stands between them and Fenris. Then I just leave the others standing still while moving in with Fenris, Cleave on and ripping away.

Fenris' random STAGGER effect enables Anders to give occasional support through Crushing Prison or Stonefist where needed. Anders will also heal or cast Barrier if needed. The second the going gets tough though, Aveline steps in to claim aggro. When the going gets tough or I just want to clear the air, I'll activate Aveline's Stonewall and enable Fenris to cleave through the entire mob around her without worrying about friendly fire.

Other than covering Anders from the occasional stray mobs, Hawke does nothing but wait for something to go wrong. The *second* a threat appears, like a mage, an assassin, or a dangerous boss, it's her turn. Hawke will use Pinpoint Strikes to apply the autocrit effect, while Aveline will beeline in on the new threat to Shield Bash or Pommel Strike it producing STAGGER. The second that hits home, Hawke will warp in with Vendetta, typically ending anything other than a boss instantly, after which she'll pick off the next critical targets with Ambush and Twin Fangs. If it wasn't enough, another STAGGER + Crushing Prison or Petrify will give her enough time to charge up on Explosive Strikes, which with the aid of STAGGER and the critical damage from Pinpoint Strikes will amount to a huge doublecrit. Of course, should the Petrify produce a BRITTLE effect, the Ambush will also step in here for another huge bonus dmg.

Basically, I try to start fights with the minimum effort needed and can clear the most typical mob with Fenris alone, aside from maybe one heal from Anders. But there's always a lot of backup just waiting for their time to step in with some insane power of their own when needed. Please, share yours as I'm going to be through the game a second time soon and am kinda eager about any new weird but working tactical ideas for the next run! :)

Fenris-aggro tank, proc stagger
Mage Hawke-abuse stagger + heal
Merrill/Anders-abuse stagger + heal (I have used the skill tree mod to give Merrill the creation tree so I can have 2 healers without Anders)
Varric-Bianca love for everybody.

Aveline is by no means necessary for nightmare.Fenris can get a ridiculous critical chance with his own and party skills/buffs to back up sunder. Stagger CCC'd with chain lightning is by far the easiest, least tactically demanding way to breeze through nightmare.

Its that simple. Win every time.

I've had this same nagging feeling throughout my game, I must admit. I've been ashamed of saying it with so many praising Aveline as something necessary. Fenris' extreme damage works at *least* as well as Aveline's taunt with the difference that it also kills mobs like no tomorrow. This is definitely something to ponder for the next playthrough. I've also been thinking about combining Barrier with mage AoE's, but it would seem overkill considering already Fenris can easily rip through mobs. He doesn't need more power for that. It's the singular tough ones and random adds from around the battlefield going after the mages, that would be the biggest problem.

Here's how I tank with ol' Fenny:

Run Fenris with Battle Synergy+taunt instead of using bravery to tank, Battle Synergy takes 50% aggro from your companions and xfers it to Fenris. You generate threat anyway with Fenris because of his damage, so bravery seems to be redundant in practice. Decreasing the relative threat of your companions worked out much better for me. When those reinforcements show up just run everyone toward Fenris, or have him charge the archers.

Mine usually involves instant death, swearing at the TV, scaring the cats, and changing the difficulty.

I was using this same exact party composition on Nightmare for quite a while until I realized the awesomeness of two mages frying STAGGERED enemies with upgraded chain lightning, setting up BRITTLE enemies with Elemental or Primal spells and hitting DISORIENTED enemies with upgraded Stonefist.

Now I use Fenris as my Tank and take Anders and Merril with me everywhere. I think if I would have taken Fenris into the Deep Roads instead of Avelline, I would have had a lot easier time with the Ancient Rock Wraith.

Since he has Giant's Reach, I have to be very careful with Fenris that everyone else is far enough away to avoid friendly fire, but he does a great job setting up lots of STAGGERED enemies with Sunder and crushing BRITTLE opponents with Reaper and Shattering Blow, plus Bolster means he can quickly recharge his batteries.

My Hawke rogue usually starts out ranged, one shotting a lieutentant with Assassinate and setting up some ranged ccc. Then she closes in on a boss with Backstab, Unforgiving Chain, Explosive Strike + Merciless Strike when the boss is staggered by Fenris and/or made BRITTLE by one of the mages.. By this time Assassinate is usually available again.

1) Aveline: Shield Bash 1-3 mobs, applying STAGGER.
2) Hawke: Hemmorhage STAGGERED mobs, potentially one-shotting them
3) Aveline: Taunt, Pommel Strike a lieutenant
4) Anders: Improved Haste
5) Isabella: Explosive Strike STAGGERED lieutenant, Twin Fang same, AoE stun group of mobs, commence general DPS
6) Hawke: Tactically Cone of Cold dangerous mobs, CCC Chain Lightning and Hemmorhage with Aveline whenever possible.
7) Spot heal with Hawke and Anders; switching into Spirit Healing on Hawke to full party rez when necessary.

Nightmare Rules of Thumb (aka Lessons Learned the Hard Way):
  • When an "assassin" appears, drop everything else and stunlock, burn, and CCC them into the ground.
  • Proximity threat is the deadliest threat. New waves of enemies will attack the closest character, which is often a softie like Anders standing on the perimeter of a fight.
  • Never group up against a blood mage or Qunari caster; their AoEs are the deadliest abilities typically encountered. I recommend the party stay on Hold and manually position on these fights.
  • Heavily prioritize CCC-capable abilites; enemy healthpools are just too large later in the game not to exploit this synergy.
  • Many fights that are extremely difficult or nigh-impossible with a given party can be made manageable by drawing the waves into a narrow choke and tanking them there. The Nexus Golem and Bekker fights come to mind.

You guys are making Nightmare way harder than it needs to be. If you build properly then you don't even need to be at the computer.

All I do is get in a fight then literally tab out browsing the internet, I have tactics set up but that isn't needed tbh. Your 2h warrior tank and 2/3 ranged rogues should be doing enough damage with just auto attacks. As long as my ranged are away from my 2h warrior tank, no one dies.

I'd love for you to elaborate on that.

I use a mix group

Anders is my first priority as the healer and support
Fenris use as tank only reason because he does more damage then Aveline and can tank if built right.
Varrick or Merill for extra damage/support crowd control to protect Anders and help Fenris
Hawk supports Fenris by picking out the minor mobs around him from distance any that go near Anders he attacks
