For me it's kinda simple. My party composition is as follows:
Hawke - Rogue
Fenris - 2h sword
Aveline - Tank
Anders - Utility / heal
I typically explore with Fenris first, since most random fights can be almost soloed with him alone. Party follow mode is always on and the second a fight starts, I turn it off to make sure no-one gets any smart ideas. Hawke and Anders stay way back, Aveline stands between them and Fenris. Then I just leave the others standing still while moving in with Fenris, Cleave on and ripping away.
Fenris' random STAGGER effect enables Anders to give occasional support through Crushing Prison or Stonefist where needed. Anders will also heal or cast Barrier if needed. The second the going gets tough though, Aveline steps in to claim aggro. When the going gets tough or I just want to clear the air, I'll activate Aveline's Stonewall and enable Fenris to cleave through the entire mob around her without worrying about friendly fire.
Other than covering Anders from the occasional stray mobs, Hawke does nothing but wait for something to go wrong. The *second* a threat appears, like a mage, an assassin, or a dangerous boss, it's her turn. Hawke will use Pinpoint Strikes to apply the autocrit effect, while Aveline will beeline in on the new threat to Shield Bash or Pommel Strike it producing STAGGER. The second that hits home, Hawke will warp in with Vendetta, typically ending anything other than a boss instantly, after which she'll pick off the next critical targets with Ambush and Twin Fangs. If it wasn't enough, another STAGGER + Crushing Prison or Petrify will give her enough time to charge up on Explosive Strikes, which with the aid of STAGGER and the critical damage from Pinpoint Strikes will amount to a huge doublecrit. Of course, should the Petrify produce a BRITTLE effect, the Ambush will also step in here for another huge bonus dmg.
Basically, I try to start fights with the minimum effort needed and can clear the most typical mob with Fenris alone, aside from maybe one heal from Anders. But there's always a lot of backup just waiting for their time to step in with some insane power of their own when needed. Please, share yours as I'm going to be through the game a second time soon and am kinda eager about any new weird but working tactical ideas for the next run!
