But that's the thing, that random piece of metal isn't even even a proper gorget or bevor, it hangs far too low & the metal guard is far too long.

I wonder if Bioware makes a DLC that is a spiritual successor to Darkspawn Chronicles...

Think about it! Templar chronicles DLC! Run on the rooftops with your templar squad and jump down to surprise Hawke and his group. Note that squad means about ~10 waves.

I always used to think that V-shaped piece of metal at the top of Hawke's champion armor was for collecting rain water or making it very hard for Hawke to take a leak or tie his boot straps. It serves absolutely no defensive purpose and looks to actually hinder mobility and perception, bad armor design! But now I have a practical use for it!

That made my day. Finally! An explanation for that rassafrackinconsarnit thingie. I can finally sleep at night again, no more tossing and turning trying to figure that silly piece of metal.

Its something seen more in jousting armour. it does have a very practical purpose in that case as getting the lance jammed under the helmet could be fatal.

It's a bit over the top, but it is based on real armour design (and even in use today).

I understand the premise of what it would do IF there were both mounts or spear-like weapons, but neither exist in this game (outside of concept art). At best it defends Hawke's belly button lent from being sighted and removed.

No. I mean the part where Anders becomes the first mage templar and kills all mages in Kirkwall and then himself because he hates mages with a passion and thus hates himself. As he kills himself, he smiles claiming victory.
