As you can clearly see on Dragon  Age: Origins.
When you choose to create a mage warden, his last name would be Amell, same as the family name of Gamlen and Hawke's mother before marriage.

Any speculations how they might be planning to use this on DLC or Dragon Age 3?

This is actually mentioned if you do the proper import. He's the son of one of Leandra's cousins.

I heard if you pick human (Mage or Human noble) in DA:O, he/she is related to Hawke family from Amell's side.

It was dissapointing to not hear anything. Its not really worth having him related to Hawke

Strange. I've definitely heard few mentions of warden-Hawke kinship on my playthrough.

In Gamlen's Hut.  I don't recall exactly why, but Leandra starts talking about how magic has always been strong in the Amell family.  "The Hero of Ferelden was an Amell"  She feared she would be outcast for falling in love with Hawke senior since he was a mage and it would only make the magic stronger in the bloodline.  That's why she ran away.

My only gripe about D2 is how the outcomes in DAO have such a small effect on the the story of D2.

Same gripe I have with ME2...ah well still interesting tid bit to know :)
