Okay I'm playing on Normal and overall I've found the game to be a little too easy, but, I don't want to micromanage my companions so it's a fair trade. I went through Dragon Age: Origins on Hard.

However, I am tired of fighting this guy. Every time I get him low, he drinks a potion and fills up. After awhile, he just does some scripted unavoidable scripted kill blow on me. He runs me through then chops my head off. I've put 4 or 5 mana bars of power into him, it just keeps going. I even have my dog helping. I'm a maxed out Elemental Mage, with nearly maxed out Force Mage and some points in spirit healer.

 WTF?

I imagine this would be a fun fight as a warrior but as a mage I think it's terrible, having to run away from your godlike enemy is rediculous.

Yeah I thought I was going to staff bash him to death as a mage because it is more "honourable" than casting spells. Imagine my dismay when he (literally) 3 hit me.

It's not that bad just use the heal spell once in awhile (I sure hope you have THAT) and farcast him while kiting around pillers. Whenever heal is back rinse and repeat. Turn it down to casual if it's that hard for you.

Take out the mages first, i did that and it was a piece of cake. They do serious damage.

See that's the reason why my Mage-hawkes answer on the proposal of an eight foot tall monstrocity to fairly duel a human female in a dress involved a kind "no thank you" and large quantities of fire.

He stuns himself when he does that stupid charging move. Attack him them, also don't forget your dog. I beat him on normal, with an archer.

I am, as you are, an Elemental Mage, and I beat him by basically running away. Cast a Winter's Grasp every so often to freeze him and give you a few seconds to make ranged staff attacks, and Horror works well too for the same purpose.

I pretty much just would Horror him, make some attacks, Winter's Grasp, make some attacks, run away a bit til Horror had recharged, rinse and repeat. He only has about three healing potions, if I remember ... once he's used those, he'll go down like a fly. You just gotta make sure you run away from his ridiculously powerful attacks and rushes.

I did the same thing with my archer. Basically just kite him until your abilities (pinning shot helps) are off cooldown, if you're lucky your dog will even get aggro. :P

lol, mage is the easiest class to fight hims as. It is the only class where I didn't have to hump the pillar for 5 mins waiting on cd's.

The most basic reason that you are having a hard time is that you are not specced imp-crushing prison.

I find this odd seeing the DAO tag below your portrait. If you have imp winter's grasp, then that is a start. He will only pot once in my experience. you should just hit him with WG, and make him chase you around the colums during cd's.

I was able on normal to burn him down without moving once, but that was a buncha lucky procs of mind blast and a few other stuns that were low % against a boss.

Force is useless against bosses for th most part. It is a fun spec for tossing lesser mobs around the map, but has no real sting against bosses. Spec 2 points for the fort boost and let it go.

Magic school strength goes something like Spirit = spirit healer > arcane > primal > the green tree > the rest.

When Varric tells his epic tale of my duel with the Arishok, do you think he'll include the part where my spirit healer mage ran like a b*tch from the dude for about a half-hour, slowly whittling away at his strength?

I felt bad for the Arishok. It's probably not the death he'd hoped for.

I had very little trouble kiting him.
Spirit bolt, Nukefist and Winters grasp are all your very good friends in this fight.

I wish I could play that fight on a highly increased speed with the Benny Hill soundtrack.

I wonder if he'll mention that I started yelling "cheater!" everytime the Arishok used a potion. Even though I used a few dozens.

But yea the duel, in terms of gameplay, was not as good as it could have been.

I had the inverse problem a lot of people had.

The problem, for me, wasn't that he killed me too fast... the problem I had was I had put so many points into constitution (for armor) and other stats that I could barely damage him at all!

All the hard boss fights in the game for me weren't because they killed me too fast, but because I was so darn slow in killing them. It was like winning a fight with chipping damage. Sure, I took more than a few dozen potions, but for the most part I just couldn't do damage, because I had neglected to pursue all those 'increase damage by X%' tree lines and so I was just doing base damage without modifiers.

I thought I should mention, Qunaries are immune to fire attack. so you might want to change to a cold staff and through out ice magic+Horror+a lot of running around. I managed to beat him in a duel as a mage, it's the hardest fight in the entire game for me.

you can refuse the duel and the fight would be easier because you'll have your tank draw all the attention like normal fights. But if you refuse to the duel and has fenris in your party, he'll add 10 point rival, especially he brought up the duel idea.

I am dealing WAY more damage to him than he to me. What do you do about the healing? Does he run out of potions after awhile? How many? I've been kiting him around with frost and pelting away at him.. I'm taking him down steadily but he just keeps healing.

What about the *instant kill* attack he's doing? Even when I'm more than half HP he'll do that if the fight lasts longer than 2 minutes or so. He runs me through, lifts me up with his swords then tosses me on the ground. I hobble to my feet, then off with my head. He's done this when I was around 70% health.

 Poorly balanced/designed fight.

I recommend picking, "I won't duel option." Because it lets you fight with all your people.

Grab some combustion grenades and stun him when he sets his axe down to heal. Doing this on nightmare with a warrior (after a few unsuccessful and frustrating attempts) made it considerably less difficult.

On my rogue I basically kited him backstabed when of cooldown and used the Explosive flasks to stun him and then use some of my heavier hitting attacks then back to kiting waiting for cooldowns. I only ever saw him drink from that flask once, however I could have missed the other times as I ran like my life depended on it. Which it did funnily enough.
This was on normal.

I wonder if anybody has altered a save game file so that he would kill his way to the arishok alone with his gimped hawke and when asked will you duel him he would be like

I'll take you all on
-alone

The Official Arishok Battle Strategy: Rogue Edition:

Backstab
Twin Fangs
Run away waiting for cooldowns
Health and stamina potions as needed
Stew with rage as he pops potion after potion
-Repeat process until he dies-

Also, you're not going to get that max combo Explosive Strike off, don't even try it.

The Arishok was ridiculously difficult compared to most other enemies in the game if you decided to fight him, even on normal mode. I followed a similar tactic to Panzer above, dual-wielding Rogue Twin Fang + Assassinate then leg it waiting for health/stamina to be accessible again.
