Personally I loved the Champion's end game Mage Armor. Except for the hood. Not because it was a hood. But because like so many of the hoods in the game, even hoods to sets, it didn't match the rest of the set. Yes I know you can hide the head pieces but still . . .

That hood was such a letdown... I expected it to have a unique appearance to go with the rest of the outgit. They could have at least re-colored it to match the set... Mint green and mauve doesn't look good period, let alone when paired with the colors of the champion set. Heck, it would only take me a few minutes to do so.

I haven't seen the champion headgear for the other two classes yet, but I've already braced myself for disappointment.

The champion set , in my opinion, looked very tight.

I agree wholeheartedly I think the mage robes are the silliest things I have ever seen. I fear doing a mage playthrough and have to watch Hawke run around dressed only in a bathrobe...aaaarrrrrgggghhhh.

I haven't worn a robe yet on my mage playthrough. *shrug*

Nor have I.

Part of it is tradition, the other part, RP aspects, leather actually restricts movement more then robes, and mages tend to require maximum movemt to cast. Frankly armored mages would just blend in and be forgotten, they need to stand out and robes make them stand out. Soft and squishy with a big magical kick is a mage by definition.

Also back in the AD&D days I remember an explanation that said that most armor interrupts the flow of magic and it's source.  It's too restrictive for mages.  Most mages aren't strong enough to wear some armors.  Certain armors could be worn because they didn't restrict movement and such, they were lighter and magically enchanted to allow even fighter mages to perform.  Mostly rare suits of elven chain for example.

So that too ties into the tradition of mages in RPGs.  It is a balance thing as much as a roleplay thing.  And it's been around for a very long time.  30 years or more?

Even moreso, it's an ancient belief outside of RPG's that's been around for hundreds of years that cold iron interferes with magic, and is deadly to magical beings. And, as you said, it is also a matter of game balance.

I want to use the Pirate robe, but the benefits of the Spiral Eye set are keeping me away from it. :(
Dress mages like the Jedi, pants, shirt and a robed coat.

thank god I got my full Champion armor. Went from cross-dressing douche' to bad-ass in the space of two missions. At least mages get the best armor overall in the game, nothing else comes close to it for the Rogues or Warriors so we get the last laugh at least, but its just an embarrasing ride until you get there!!

No if only I could find a decent staff that didnt look like a twig..................

I agree. Mages beings restricted to robes is archaic. It just feels stupid that the armor of choice for the battlemage who will be going up against thousands of sword swinging enemies is a ****ing velvet robe. I'm not expecting something on the level of warrior heavy armor, but I am looking for something that looks like it could give some reasonable protection. The look of the champion's armor set is fantastic. It offers the feel of something a hardened battlemage would wear but I was hoping for other sets to also have that type of look.

Mage Hawke isnt restricted to Robes. If you put the required points into Strength, Constitution, Desterity etc then you can wear whatever armours n whatnot you like.

There are three sets of mage pants that I am aware of:
  • Starting outfit -- I wore this most of the game on my Hawkette.
  • One of the mid-tier robes --  I wrote this down some place.  You buy it in Lowtown, I believe.
  • Late game gear -- what you see in the promos.  I won't spoil it except to say PANTS.
I wore the starter gear until I got the Champion garb.  I'm not kidding.  It looked good... kind of a Star Wars smuggler look and feel, and was a great change from an endless series of robes.

I made a group where we can display our solidarity and discuss awesome Mage Pants.  Feel free to join!

You can call me Suspenders cuz I support mage pants.

Neither DA:O or DA2 makes mages rove attire only.....wear what you want providing you have the stats.

The issue only came about originally because of the DnD ruleset.

Ahaha, I kept the starting gear until I got the Pirate outfit, and then kept that until the end of the game. Stat benefits be damned.

I put on some robes at the end of Act 1 and then was just crying throughout that whole cut scene, Hawke looked so stupid. I felt embarrassed on his behalf.

I can understand 'strength' requirements, but when has someone needed 'cunning' to slip on a pair of jeans?

Well, while Cunning doesn't make much sense, neither does Strength after a point. So you need 14 Strength to put on a certain suit of plate armour but 34 to put on another? Is it made out of neutron stars or something? Even then, you should be able to wear it but just move a bit slower or something.

It's obviously just a filtering system so that you only get benefits relevant to your class unless you want to slightly nerf your character by giving it otherwise useless stats. In terms of pure Armour, it's odd since I've seen mage and rogue armour with a higher Armour value than my warrior's current gear. Some games do it in their own way, like in New Vegas how it lowers your movement speed so you feel sluggish wearing heavy armour but anyone can, or like in games like Final Fantasy II where anyone can wear heavy armour but doing so will raise your Strength over time which in turn lowers your Magic over time, so you'll be turning into a really crappy mage.

If the mages could have similar looks like the battlemage in Sacred I would roll one immediately. Only game where I have prefered mage over Warrior type

It's the zipper.  It's a mechanical device and thus needs Cunning to operate it.

I want armour made out of neutron stars. That is all.

I would wager the reason Mages wear robes is to divide the classes.  Same concept with weapons, why just staves?

The only problem with robes, and why there should be more non-robe options is that you stand out for templars. It makes no sense in an RP game for every apostate to be wearing an outfit that only mages would wear. From the silly mage headwear to the silly "look at me I'm an apostate but I'm hiding" robes.

At least bethany and meril can hide from templars since they would blend in as "not a mage". Anders and Hawke stand out.

My current mage, Henrick Hawke, doesn't wear robes. He runs around with no shirt on, so people can admire his rippling muscles.

If people wants more non-robe option, don't use templars as excuse. I mean even the main Templar knows that you are mage and what does she do? Nothing, lets apostate mage to live free in they town. Player character should never been apostate mage in DA2.

So, if you want more customation as look, just ask. There was few leather cloths for mages, I remember wearing some "pirates" leather cloths one time.
