Why do mages HAVE to wear robes?

But still. I want wands. I think it makes sense in relation to accuracy over power and used by mages in hiding. But I'm not saying I'd want it as a forced equipment for all apostates or mages. Just an option. Plus it just gives something else for mages to be custom with. I mean Warriors get 2H and Shield. Rogues Daggers and Archery. Mages... Staves. [cue the debbie downer tune] Mages need a choice too.

I actually like wearing robes as a mage, makes him feel more mage like, come on look at Gandal, he was epic and still wearing a robe wasn't he? He also had a staff, though sometimes wish a mage could use a magical sword in the game.
Again, that is fine when you aren't trying to not be noticed. I have no issues with the Circle Mages being in robes but out in the wild there should be apostates trying a little bit more subtlely in their dress.

True it felt rather weird, after all mages trying to escape but still wearing their robes and being easy targets that way, then again games aren't realistic, look at Oblivion. A guy wearing a black leather armor with a hood on and carrying weapons and the guards do nothing while all the other civilians don't even have weapons on.

I can understand 'strength' requirements, but when has someone needed 'cunning' to slip on a pair of jeans?
Date night? That's when I put my skinny jeans on!

The requirments for a lot of things, maybe your skinny jeans, seems awfully high and are really not reachable unless you really min/max the hades out of your character. I really hate the CON requirement on shields since I want my tank to have Cunning because I don't want them getting hit so that really f's with my builds.

And yes, the req for skinny jeans is too high! It's that "skinny" stat I have the most trouble with.

Of course they can tell just as you can tell who is a rogue in leather and using 2 weapons or a bow "Oh look there is a thief walking about" or a templar in their uniformed armor with robe like a mage can't see them coming.
Even if mages didn't wear robes the templars have their way of hunting them, though they use lyrium to do so they can sense a mage when around.

I really don't like the look of most of them, for one (Champion armor/robe aside). Also, it just didn't make sense that apostates would run around in something like that. At least the Robe of the Notorious Pirate was pretty awesome looking.
It's not a huge deal, but I would like to see this changed in DA3.

I wore the Pirate outfit for both sexs up untill the Champ armour parts were available. Even then Armour Chestplate sat in the chest until endgame. Just wore gloves and boots buffed with accessories to compensate.
Fav for teh nasty Ladyhawk was overseers armour because she and Patrice were allies.

I believe the load the screen was trying to subtly imply that your mage's shouldn't be in a position to find out how much protection their robes offer.Jorrkit wrote...
I remember one of the loading screens from DA:O said something like, "Robes don't offer as much protection as you'd think against swords and axes." How much protection would anyone have a right to expect, Load Screen? Unless the robes are made out of space shuttle, I would fully anticipate that, against a sword or an axe, a cloth robe will offer no protection whatsoever. Namely, it will suck.

Only thing thats a bit odd is we go to the Gallows with long robes and a big stick on our back, and we're supposed to be incognito lol. I dont know what they could do to change that though. I liked how in FO different people would respond to what clothes you were wearing, but that could be a bit severe in DA...

My Hawke mage wore the pirate robes pretty much until she got her champion robes. It is extremely difficult to not stand out as an apostate when you're standing there in robes and carrying a staff. That's one thing I liked about sword-staves. They could quite possibly pass for a more elaborate sword than a true staff. It's a stretch, but better than nothing.
I'll add another vote for Pirate Robes. I wore then until they were just so badly obsolete as far as stats went that I couldnn't stand it because my other options were awful.
It isn't purely fashion sense. I mean the hats in DAO were ugly but I didn't mind them because the worked for the world. The robes in DA2, how to describe this, made my mages head look small. There's something about the way the robes don't so much seem to drape over you as encapsulate you. The neck opening on the robes when you saw it on a cutscene didn't look like fabric as much as they looked like the Turian armor Archangel is in.

I was wondering why an apostate would want to look like a mage in a city of Templars.
I wore my merc outfit until I got the champion gear because I didn't want to wear robes. (side note I like the sleeveless look so I passed on the pirate robes too)
I'll try to com back and read more of this thread later but I was hoping for more mage gear that was not robes.

Maybe the pair of jeans look so stupid that you need a special kind of charisma to wear them without feeling self conscious.
