LOL I loved that line in DAO.

But still. I want wands. I think it makes sense in relation to accuracy over power and used by mages in hiding. But I'm not saying I'd want it as a forced equipment for all apostates or mages. Just an option. Plus it just gives something else for mages to be custom with. I mean Warriors get 2H and Shield. Rogues Daggers and Archery. Mages... Staves. [cue the debbie downer tune] Mages need a choice too. :D

I actually like wearing robes as a mage, makes him feel more mage like, come on look at Gandal, he was epic and still wearing a robe wasn't he? He also had a staff, though sometimes wish a mage could use a magical sword in the game.

Again, that is fine when you aren't trying to not be noticed. I have no issues with the Circle Mages being in robes but out in the wild there should be apostates trying a little bit more subtlely in their dress.

True it felt rather weird, after all mages trying to escape but still wearing their robes and being easy targets that way, then again games aren't realistic, look at Oblivion. A guy wearing a black leather armor with a hood on and carrying weapons and the guards do nothing while all the other civilians don't even have weapons on.

I can understand 'strength' requirements, but when has someone needed 'cunning' to slip on a pair of jeans?

Date night? That's when I put my skinny jeans on!

The requirments for a lot of things, maybe your skinny jeans, seems awfully high and are really not reachable unless you really min/max the hades out of your character. I really hate the CON requirement on shields since I want my tank to have Cunning because I don't want them getting hit so that really f's with my builds.

@sidney, I agree esp as the issue isn't confined to mages (in fact I don't play them). I thought DAO was more forgiving in this regard, My rogue settled into medium armor (can't recall the name of the set) that was much more interesting than all the look alike light armor.

And yes, the req for skinny jeans is too high! It's that "skinny" stat I have the most trouble with.

Mages wear robes even in online rpg's along with priests and warlocks even templars and paladins even though it is plate only in DA Mages are of all magics even healing in DAO the robes all looked the same just different colors. I have not made a mage yet in DA2 so i'm not sure on if the robes have different looks to them or not.

Of course they can tell just as you can tell who is a rogue in leather and using 2 weapons or a bow "Oh look there is a thief walking about" or a templar in their uniformed armor with robe like a mage can't see them coming.

Even if mages didn't wear robes the templars have their way of hunting them, though they use lyrium to do so they can sense a mage when around.

I totally thought this as I played through my first mage run! I'd loot a body, find something Hawke could actually wear and, oh... a robe. Lovely.

I really don't like the look of most of them, for one (Champion armor/robe aside). Also, it just didn't make sense that apostates would run around in something like that. At least the Robe of the Notorious Pirate was pretty awesome looking.

It's not a huge deal, but I would like to see this changed in DA3.

I wore the Pirate outfit for both sexs up untill the Champ armour parts were available. Even then Armour Chestplate sat in the chest until endgame. Just wore gloves and boots buffed with accessories to compensate.
Fav for teh nasty Ladyhawk was overseers armour because she and Patrice were allies.Image IPB

My Hawke mage wore the pirate robes pretty much until she got her champion robes. It is extremely difficult to not stand out as an apostate when you're standing there in robes and carrying a staff. That's one thing I liked about sword-staves. They could quite possibly pass for a more elaborate sword than a true staff. It's a stretch, but better than nothing.

I remember one of the loading screens from DA:O said something like, "Robes don't offer as much protection as you'd think against swords and axes." How much protection would anyone have a right to expect, Load Screen? Unless the robes are made out of space shuttle, I would fully anticipate that, against a sword or an axe, a cloth robe will offer no protection whatsoever. Namely, it will suck.

I believe the load the screen was trying to subtly imply that your mage's shouldn't be in a position to find out how much protection their robes offer.

Circle Robes are stunning, if anyone else is as sad as me and likes to wear the nicest looking.

Only thing thats a bit odd is we go to the Gallows with long robes and a big stick on our back, and we're supposed to be incognito lol. I dont know what they could do to change that though. I liked how in FO different people would respond to what clothes you were wearing, but that could be a bit severe in DA...

I'll add another vote for Pirate Robes. I wore then until they were just so badly obsolete as far as stats went that I couldnn't stand it because my other options were awful.

It isn't purely fashion sense. I mean the hats in DAO were ugly but I didn't mind them because the worked for the world. The robes in DA2, how to describe this, made my mages head look small. There's something about the way the robes don't so much seem to drape over you as encapsulate you. The neck opening on the robes when you saw it on a cutscene didn't look like fabric as much as they looked like the Turian armor Archangel is in.

Sorry I didn't really read much of this thread.

I was wondering why an apostate would want to look like a mage in a city of Templars.

I wore my merc outfit until I got the champion gear because I didn't want to wear robes. (side note I like the sleeveless look so I passed on the pirate robes too)

I'll try to com back and read more of this thread later but I was hoping for more mage gear that was not robes.

I do not understand aswell. I'm an apostat, I don't respect the rules, why should I respect the dresscode of the mages of the Circle ? I cringed a lot before I let it go and accept to dress my male Hawke with these robes...I even put his hair longer, to give him more....presence, style...
He is supposed to hide  what he is, but he is walking around with a mage robe !  They are really dumb these templars :D

Maybe the pair of jeans look so stupid that you need a special kind of charisma to wear them without feeling self conscious.:P

Cuz they would look pretty silly fighting monsters in the buff.

(BTW) the mage packs in DA2 came with some pretty amazing armour for mages...(not just robes).

the logical answer is obviously game balance.if they let you wear heavy armor with no penalties to your stats you will just make a mage tank and leave the other party members sitting at home.this was not their intentions and so you cannot break the game.or it could be a way of expressing themselves idk.*shrugs*
