So is the duel possible to achieve without Isabela returning (I didn't romance her, nor had friendship anywhere near high with her so she's gone) or Fenris (I didn't pick him beforehand, and if I want to have him there I'd have to redo all the fighting before that... seems the best way out for now).

Right now I'm there with Anders, Aveline my Mage and Merrill and every option leads to the group battle. Which I'd rather not do. So can you do this duel at all without having either Fenris with your or Isabela returning? It just strikes me as a little odd considering I keep hearing everyone talk about the duel.. did seriously that many people have Isabela and/or Fenris there?

I don't know why Fenris is relevant. Isabela isn't there because she's in your group, she's there because she shows up.

You have to become a "worthy opponent" in the Arishok's eye. You'll get an achievement for it when you do enough to earn that distinction via dialog with him concerning quest consequences dealing with Qunari. Be up-front with him, thats what it takes.

Fenris is relevant because if you have him along (and I think with high Friendship), he suggests a duel.

Fenris is relevant because of his information about the Qunari. He can remark on a duel being possible.
But, I don't have him with me.

Isabela is not in my group, nor will she return. I didn't have her 'friendly' and so she took off with the relic and won't be helping me out. So she won't be there to start the duel either.

Yeah, I believe I have this. This just means he'll call you the title of Basalit-an, no? Or is he supposed to say more? Basically up to this point I've been mostly straight forward with him. So I'm assuming I earned his respect.

I have yet to reach the Arishok fight, so I don't know for certain.  All I know is that I got an achievement unlock notice when I said enough up-front stuff with him in Act 2 where he said "I'll keep at least one good thought about this place" or somesuch.  And I then read that if he views you as such, the duel option is made available.

I think you have to do enough such conversations with him.  I noticed when I did a re-playthru because I missed stuff in Act 1 that the qunari who accosts you about the missing patrol near the beginning of act 2 will have differing dialog depending on whether or not you mentioned you party-wiped the avarad who you met after escorting the Sarebas.  Basically, if you told the big guy you killed them, guard guy says you have notoriety for being capable of killing Qunari, and if not, you're just "an honorable type" or somesuch.

I see.. You get the achievement before then?
What options did you pick? Green ones? Red ones?

Fenris has a special dialogue with the Arishok that gets you one of the three endings.

This is purely off memory....

I told him about wiping the Arvarad during the Sarebas escort mission.  I had Beth along and Arvarad went ape**** over her being a mage, if that matters...  I think other mages in the party may have such a dialog option for them too, though this may only matter for geting the Talisman of Sarebas (which you will want to get anyway).

I told him about Petrice's little plot involving that.

I told him about the elves who were the true culprits behind the crazy gas incident.

I told the Viscount not to burn the mutilated bodies after Petrice botches things up again, and was up front about what happened with that.

I think it was at that point that I got the achievement unlock for "Worthy Opponent".

I got it as well now. Had to redo the conversation prior to the Qunari attack.
I figured I picked one of the middle options there which dodged the initial quest..  "What would you do Hawke?" and I initially picked something like "You should leave the city" if I am not mistaken. But I redid and picked the "I would fight for them" option which now granted me the achievement as well.

So I should be set now, I suppose.

Yeah, as far as I can tell you need either one of these three requirements:

1. Get the achievement that he respects you.
2. Take Fenris with you.
3. Having romanced Isabela she returns to help you.

I found it to be far, far easier. In fact, it's a pretty easy fight overall. Only thing is that I had a full Creation/Blood Mage so it took ages to kill him.

I did have the group fight a few times before trying to get the duel, which didn't work out all that well but I didn't bother to do that as much as I wanted the duel. But then you fight the Arishok, two Sarebaas and a lot of random Qunari. Which I found a little.. overwhelming.
