Other; Mages should be free, but trained in "Mage School" or something. Like it isn't the circle (or it could be the new circle). There's these schools all over Thedas, in mostly the major cities. You have freedom to see your family and stuff, but it is mandatory to go to the school (since you have a dangerous power as a mage).

^ Yes. And there should be a government for the mages, by the mages, to keep them from demonic possession. In other words, the Dalish model. And it should not be separated into individual Circles, but combined in a universal organization representing all mages in Thedas.
We have several existing models about how to deal with mages in Thedas:
Qunari: Mages are abused mercilessly.
Tevinter: Mages abuse others mercilessly.
Circle/Templar: Mages and others try their best to abuse each other.
Dalish: Mages and non-mages coexist in a peaceful balance.
Seriously, the Dalish are the best.

Boom, Dalish got the answers. The problem is that Mages will always be treated with some form of fear/hostility given there power. But they should be free.

The circle needs to morph into the school idea, Templars need to be the protectors of normal people, to prevent Tevinter from happening, but more freedom all the way around. The Circle needs to be "open" once the mage is trained and more of a oversite and study area, with a combination of mages and Chantry/Templars personnel governing the mages.

mages should be free. there should be schools to help train mages properly and blood mages should be hunted down and killed like any other criminal.
the templars should be part of the guard or miltary of the area and not under control of the chantry. just simply a more specialized "anti-mage" swat team of sorts for when you're dealing with evil mages.

I agree that freedom is awesome, but I don't think freedom is for everyone. A lot of mages, given their freedom, simply just lash back at the templars. They do not fear them, so some decide to strike back. Many mages are not strong enough to not be controlled by demons. There HAS to be some form of government to watch out for mages.

I think a large part of the problem the circles have at the moment lies in what people become templars - as it is now, there's three kinds of templars;
a) Those who want to make a name for themselves (which you do by mercilessly hunting apostates)
Religious Zealots who think every mage is a soul cursed by the maker himself, that should lead a life of atonement
c) People who got bitter, because a bloodmage ate their sister/mother/dog/home village
And then there's maybe one in a hundred who actually is there to help mages not get eaten by demons. But with that kind of people watching you, it's not exactly a surprise that the whole "help the mages" idea falls a bit short. Let only people become templars who have magical relatives, or some genuine interest in protecting the mages, and allow the mages to keep some familyties (or indeed build new ones in the circles) and suddenly the whole Idea becomes a lot more appealing.

The Chantry screwed the pooch on this one. They apparently have a group called the Seekers that watch the Templars but they don't have a large enough group of Seekers to do anything meaningful about corruption and abuse within the Circles.
More Seekers who police the police to make sure such abuses are corrected. The Mages, especially the First Enchanter but also the leaders of the fraternities, should be able to go to the Seekers directly with their reports of abuse.
As Kirkwall showed when the Knight-Commander abuses their power the only place the First Enchanter or any mage can go is to the Knight-Commander. That's no solution at all.
If nothing else if someone accuses the Knight-Commander of corruption or scandal the Seekers should suspend the Knight-Commander's executive powers and investigate the charges. If the mage is found lying then a severe punishment is placed on the mages.
But of course, who watches the watchmen? It's not a perfect system, but nothing is, but some Seeker oversight during the 7 years in Kirkwall would have ended this before it began. Anyone with common sense would have stripped Meredith of her power.
