Double Romance Bug (?)

In Act 2, I started an affair with Isabela, which I never intended to last, since it's a ten year story I wanted to try being with more than one companion.
In Act 3, after doing Merrill's decisive quest and maxing out her rivalry, she stopped by and I eagerly took the chance to finally start a romance with her, which I had already thought impossible as there is no option to break up with Isabela if you don't get rid of her some other way.
So far, so good. I even talked with Isabela after asking Merrill to move in and it seemed clear that Isabela recognized her own affair with Hawke as nothing too serious, but still there was no definite option to break up with her.
I got the romance'd outfit for Merrill, not for Isabela, so the game obviously recognized who the LI was. However, in the epilogue, Varric mentions Isabela staying at Hawke's side, not Merrill, so at some point the game seems to have gotten the romances mixed up.
Also, I didn't have Merrill in my party for the final fight and while she was fighting alongside the rest of the companions in the Circle Tower, she was clearly absent from the fight in the Gallows Courtyard against the golden boys. It was as though she had disappeared from history itself. I haven't tried yet whether the epilogue turns out differently if I make sure she sees the ending by having her in my final party.
I understand that this probably isn't a very high priority to fix - it isn't really for me even, it will only become important once I want to import that savegame into further DLC or Dragon Age III, when I'd like to have my LI properly recognized. Just wanted to bring it to attention - sorry if it's been mentioned already, I can't find the search finction since the revamping of the forums.

you can do this in act 3??? i'm in act 2 and did what you did: isabela then merrill. merrill has moved in and i have yet to talk to isabela, but i'm assuming we're done... hmmm, guess i'll have to see how my playthrough ends. thanks for the info!
Yeah, I only maxed out Merrill's rivalry shortly before the finale, on account of my playing a mage, but being unsupportive of Blood Magic, which gave me mixed friendship and rivalry scores with her. So I only got her friendly (rivalrous ?) visit after all her personal quests were done, the last of which gave me a heaping helping of rivalry points... for good reason. But I still love that broken, sad little jolly elf! One of the best Bioware characters in a game of great Bioware characters.

How is the rival romance with Merril? Does the keeper still sacrifice herself to save her? is the outcome any different than if you are her friend? . Because I always wonder if I`m doing the right thing by supporting her, or if I should stop her from trying to fix the mirror.

Hey Shinannigan i had the same thing you did but i know what happen during the last bit of the game where you talk to teammates before the big fight did you kiss isabella first when you went to go talk to her or did you go and kissed merril cause i did the exact same thing you did and then at the final part i kissed isabella and then merril and ended up having isabella by my side at the end.
I didn't kiss Isabela, only Merrill, but I talked to her before I talked to Merrill. So maybe that's it, gotta try that. TY.

I only started the Romance after the death of the keeper, so I don't know whether it's the same if you start it before, but to me the romance didn't feel particularly rivalrous, but rather just how I would imagine a friendly romance to be. Apart from the fact that Merrill only moves a single sad little daisy into the Hawke Estate, but I don't know whether she brings more stuff into a friendly romance.
