The respec bugs and general tactics AI is killing it for me.

So I respec once at level 6 and everything is fine, then I respec again at level 12 once I'm at the Rock Wraith simply because the developers had this craaaaaaazy idea to make it so a build that makes Nightmare a walk in the park up until that point becomes 100% useless.  So, I respec, get all of the attribute points as well as skills that I should have for level 12 (+1 from a tome).  The problem is, as soon as I save the game and reload it, I now have half of the abilities in a tree I originally had before the respec.  Then, if you respec yet again, you'll get even more points on top of that.  Some people might think this is a useful bug, but it's not for someone who is trying to play honestly and min/max on the way.

My companions respec fine without any issues, but my main character keeps getting extra points.  On top of that, if you respec after level 14, it gives another specialization, so now you can get all three.  This is very annoying, especially if you don't want to spend those points, and you have to keep track each level (especially if you were saving some) so as to not overspend.  But then you get to see the annoying level up arrow for eternity.

Then you have the problem with tactics and companion AI.  Bioware has never been known for good AI, and in fact, allies are usually about as intelligent as Sandal, tactics on or OFF, having them on hold or not.

1. If you select the entire group and point to an area on the ground you want them to go to, at least part of the time one of them will stop and start attacking, even if you issued this command while the game was paused -- this is with them on hold and with tactics off.

2.  Half of the time when you put them on hold they will still fire like they should, other times they just stand there.

3. Half of the time (or more) when you select the group and command them to attack a target while they are on hold, they will do nothing at all.

4. Most of the time, even if you have them setup as "ranged" or "defensive", your ranged classes will run up a few feet away from enemies and attack if even a pebble is on the ground between them and the target.  They also refuse to run away when attacked.

Often with tactics off, your companions will RANDOMLY use abilities, this is especially obnoxious with someone like Aveline, who is required to get Retaliation if you want Bodyguard.  The problem is, it makes her freeze in place and not even move, the same as Stonewall.  Neither of these even say in their description either that you are rooted in place and cannot perform any actions.  I don't even have this ability setup on the tactics bar now, but I did at one point, so it's like the game is storing all of the tactics you already removed and still using them if you have whatever you overwrote it with on.

And does the description for the Stonewall upgrade make any sense at all?  "The Warrior's strikes against foes now deal damage".  What strikes?  My character doesn't even move, they are frozen in place.  Neither Stonewall nor Retaliation work the way they should.

Don't even get me started on the whole "use this tactic in the next line" options. Almost none of them work ever.

also, during some battles, when you order a companion to do something like pull a lever and then switch back to your own char, they'll run halfway there and change their mind to attack some other stuff.

I also found that when you revive your teammates, they tend to just stand there and do nothing, if you order them to attack, they'll do it but return to doing nothing as soon as you switch to someone else.

Also if you put one character on hold and move the other 3 around, he/she will NOT stay put and follow you around. When I put someone on hold I expect them to stay there. -.-

I didn't think it was even possible to put specific characters on hold.  It's the entire group or nothing.

I agree with everything you said Graunt. You also didnt mention that you often have to give commands 10 times for the party to listen, and often times when you have your entire group selected and click on the ground nothing happens until you click 10 times in different areas, then the move command finally registers.

I was also annoyed by Stonewall's mechanics in my run through DA:2 and promply specced Aveline out of that entire tree save for a single point in Elemental Aegis. But anyway to answer your question the couple of times I've gotten Stonewall to work, it works exactly as described in the tooltip. What the ability basically should do is set your Warrior in a bracing pose for around 2 or so seconds. If the Warrior is hit with a melee attack while the ability is active, the Warrior then retaliates with a force attack that sends weaker enemies reeling (the baseline force mod isn't very high thus it isn't quite that effective in situations you might want it to be in). With the upgrade the force emanation actually has a damage component added to it, although as you progress further in the game the damage becomes less and less material relative to mob health.

The ability does have its uses if you either manually control it or set up a clever tactic script for it (haven't figured one out that works reliably myself), often times what happens is Aveline goes into the bracing pose and the enemy mobs immediately switch targets since she slows down or maybe even completely stops her threat generation. Honestly I didn't miss the talent (or any other save Aegis from the tree) for one second since speccing out of it, and I finished my completion without bothering with Bodyguard or Retaliation either. Shield Wall + Rally or Battle Synergy served her well enough through even the toughest encounters and having more stam available for Taunt, Assault and Scatter increased her snap aggro generation. This in turn let my Merrill unload more AoEs, made fights shorter and thus easier. As counterintuive at it may have seemed at first to actually lower Aveline's mitigation potential, it made her a far better tank in the end. :/

Hope this helps.

There is a post on the board saying the Respec bug is related to the number of potions you have in your pack. The way to get by is to offload all your potions before respecing the the bug will not hit. You may also try drinking two potions in a row, or drink clear tactics, drink again save and reload.

Problems on the x360 as well. If I put my party on hold then tell them to move somewhere else on the map they will completely ignore it. If I allow them to move freely and tell them to move somewhere they will go to that spot and then walk right back next to me as if I wanted them over there for only a second. Sometimes when on hold and they do listen and move to where I tell them to but they won't attack even if something comes to them at melee range. It really irks me cause this is random the behavior is not always like this except for times I really really need them to listen to me.

I don't have issues with Aveline being an ok tank, and she also never runs out of stamina for me either.  Using this:biowarefans.com/dragon-age-2-talent-builder/#2.  The problem is when she randomly uses either Retaliation or Immovable, which she's no longer setup to use since the tactic didn't work correctly anyway when I was using it.  You can also makeup the one of only two useful mitigation talents in the SnS tree by buying a necklace.

Thanks for the tips on how to get around the respec issue.:)

I respecced twice today and now I have 2 specialization trees before level 14. I don't generally use cheats and exploits when i play games so I'm pretty sad about this

The advice in the link given above fixed the problem for me at least.  Just dump all of your consumable items in your chest before respeccing.  It won't get around the bug if you're doing it at an act end boss, but it seems to reset correctly if you respec again afterwards using the above method.
