Those are common enemies and there's even bigger boss variants.

A hundred of those things attacking the characters would be extremely creepy, unlike the cuddly big spiders.
Oh thats an awesome idea, the Mama spider could have an ability like the insect swarm spell from DA:O but instead it would tons of little spiders crawling over the character doing nature damage. BRILLIANT!
It would be hard to render with their current tech, but we all know (and hope) the next DA will have a new engine.
Perhaps there could be different kinds as well. Big spiders don't scare we, it's the fast moving ones with large fangs. Like the pictures that have been posted. Sure, they're big, but tiny in comparison to DA II spiders. I still like the giant spiders though, I just don't get the creeps.

I still jump every time they appear in DA2 and have to make sure they die as quickly as possible :x

I'm an arachnophobe, but for the most part was able to handle the spiders in DA:O because they were few and far between and typically just in the Dalish Forests.
Even now, I could tolerate them though it does creep me out when I see one of them drop down from the ceiling right in front of the screen (making it feel like it is touching my face).
But now Bioware introduced these monstrous spiders, which for whatever reason prefer targetting me and I end up with shots of it coming directy towards the screen, trapping me in a relentless combo as my character staggers until they die.
Thanks a lot Bioware, I think I'm going to need a therapist. Any other arachnophobes here bothered by these monstrous spiders?
I find mens size 12 to 13 shoes take care of any spider problems I might have.
O.M.G.!!!
that things huge.
as for spiders in this game.
the ones that i really dont like are the smaller wasp spiders etc. find them creepy, but the monstrous spiders, and spider queen look a bit absurd really because they are so bulbous.

The way they drop from the ceiling in Dragon Age
startles me every now and then though.

Hmm, come to think of it, I think there was another encounter (not spiders), when the music/sounds suddenly picked up.
Heh, I don't recall being as surprised as I was w/ those encounters than I was with most of the entire FEAR 2 game (except that one bit *spoiler* near the swimming pool...I think it was a bug, but I couldn't move...then when I looked down, there was Alma. I think she was supposed to appear behind me, which I kinda was expecting...but not 'below' me.
*grumble* stupid cheap shots... *grumble*

"Well, they ditched a LoTR style story... but hey, I get to kill Shelob!"
I like the monstrous spider. I've been waiting to kill a spider THAT size forever.

Also thanks for posting links to the arcahnophobe mod, unfortunately I play on the Xbox 360 so yeah... not an option for me.
If Bioware did feel to make a toggle option in their future games that would be great actually, I understand the point of spider monsters is to scare the opponent but I just can't tolerate spiders that large and that move so realistically.

The Fallout 3 ones weren't too bad as they were still relatively small.

At least they don't seem to have the overwhelm/maul attack in DA2. The 1st real big guy was a surprise that is for sure. I went blundering into the passage and see some spiders.....bah no problem then I look right above my mages head and it's "uh-oh".
LOL you beat me to it.
No Overwhelm or apparent status effects make the DA II spiders kinda just another generic mob to me.

I think a thousand tiny spiders engulfing the players would be far more disturbing.
I agree completely! Id love tribute to the Mummy movies. The parts where the little scarabs swarm and rip the people to pieces. That would make the DA world a little bit creepier for me
