My favourite character would be Myself.
Regarding the other side-characters... Well...the Lady of the woods is really well designed x) (anime-like i'd say).
Favorite character and why?

Leliana! She's very feminine but also very intelligent and capable. It seems to be one or the other with most female characters in games, so I love the fact that she has both. Sometimes I've wondered why so many people have a fascination with shoes, but Leliana explained it so well that I might actually appreciate them more IRL.
I am planning to do an evil playthrough next, and I'm thinking I might just have to refuse to Leliana join my party. I don't think I could bring myself to "harden" her.
Sten is my second favorite. His conversation with the dog was the funniest part of the game so far.

Really difficult to settle for one but if I had to choose I would probably choose Morrigan. Alistair and Shale are very sad if I say that out loud though.

I started off liking alistair. He seemed a good guy little unsure of himself but with his heart in the right place. By the end of the game, I wrote him off as a spoiled kid. Like a freshman fratboy at college who came from a rich family or something.
I liked Leliana a lot, until the shoes thing.
I think I actually ended up liking Wynne the most. I mean, she is named "win!" to begin with. If my life was on the line, she is probably the person I would entrust my faith. When I first met her, I thought her chaarcter would turn out completey different.

I'm a bit torn between Alistair and Zevran--I like how deeply flawed Alistair turns out, for one thing (a lot of people were turned off to him by this, but it only made him more interesting for me). As for Zevran, I love how multi-layered he turns out (at first, I thought he was two-dimensional, but I was proven very wrong), and I like how his motivations are called into so much question by what you find out about him through romance/friendship.

I feel really sorry for Sandal =( Especially seeing him **SPOILER** in the end level all by himself in a room full of darkspawn corpses, his face stained with blood, his pops probably dead...and he doesnt comprehend the situation. **SPOILER**
Overall I have to say Sten is probably my favourite. The fact that he's such a stoic makes those rare moments of wit from him that much better.

**SPOILER**
If you talked to his foster father about how he found him, it's assumed that Sandal singlehandedly killed all the darkspawn on the first floor. He's a darkspawn killing machine besides enchanting.

Sten.
He's got some great lines, and I really dig how he slowly warms and opens up to you if you spend time with him.
Add me to the list of people who's terribly disappointed that he's not a romance option.

Leliana, I love the whole sexy, french, nun bard assassin angle shes got going. And I always harden her. Drop the nun routine and embrace your inner bard.

If you refuse her, she might stay behind in Lothering and get killed. How could you do that to her!
If you must be evil, leave her at camp for the missions. She can stand there and look pretty.

1: Gorim, the Aeducan's second-born's faithful Second. Absolutely amazing character.
2: Probably Leliana. Watch Cinematic Trailer at: (( )) to see why.
3: Hmmm.... Oghren.
DEAD LAST: About an ocean apart from my second least favorite (the nug wrangler) we find Morrigan. May she die in turmoil.

Another vote for Leliana.
* She has a complex backstory and fitted well with my personal play style of a redeemer-paladin.
Morrigan sent me through the whole gammit of opinions.
* At first I found her arrogant and annoying.
* During her companion quest I felt sorry for her and did all I could to comfort / help her.
* Then at the end I despised her thoroughly.
(Paradoxically, I believe this made her a "good" character from a literary perspective).
Sten was great once you broke through his barriers.
Alistair, like Morrigan, changed depending on the stage of the plot.
* Early on I found him to be a whining tool.
* After a while I empathised with his back-story (I was a Human Noble).
* Later I considered him a good friend for my character, an adoptive brother.
* Towards the end I was dissapointed that he had not grown and was becoming petty and imputent.
Shale = HK-47 upgraded!

Thanks for reminding me of that! I think there's a certain point where she might leave your party without you having to kill her, so I'd try to go for that. I wouldn't want her to be even a passive participant in my new character's nefarious dealings.
Of course that might make her question her vision...but it could always turn out that right after leaving my party she meets the person she's actually destined to help

Oghren and Alistar all the way. Alistar's the "best friend" and pretty damn important to your character, ya know, being a fellow warden and all.
Oghren is both really funny and really tragic, it's a great combo that works in the story.

Easily Zevran. I thought I wouldn't like him, but I needed a rogue who can fight for my first playthrough, and I discovered how hilarious he was.

I'm looking forward to trying to get to Oghren earlier in my game - I did the dwarven quests last and barely had time to get to know him or raise his approval (I had stupidly used most all my relevant gifts anyway). I've read a few responses in this forum about what he has to say once you really get to know him and it sounds great. I'm glad I left one companion unexplored - I pretty much exhausted the rest in my first run through.

There isn't nearly enough Sten love in this thread. Like one of the posters above mentioned, the way our stoic Qunari friend slowly comes out of his shell (albeit a little) made him the most rewarding character interaction to me. His voice actor was perfect as well.

They are all pretty good side kicks, I for one love their interactions while traveling. But as far as conversations and interactions Oghren and Shale are by far the best. I keep them in my party and sub out the 4th just so I can hear what sort of smack talk they throw out, hilarious stuff.

As far as companions go, I too think Sten was underrated, and I liked how if you brought him along, he might make comments about things that you could later ask, such as the children running about in Denerim and the Chantry in Redcliffe. I think Bioware should do more things like that, allow the players to ask about things that their companions randomly mention.
I also liked Levi Dryden, though the whole 'merchant following you until you camp' thing was a little far-fetched. I read that other thread about people who can't stand him, but I personally love his voice and wish he would stay in camp with me. In fact, if there was a way to romance him, I would!
I think some of the less notable NPCs are probably among my favorites. Brother Genitivi is one of them, if only for the "Willy toiled away for many a year" line, which makes me laugh every time. I also really got a kick out of Carroll if you avoid the persuade/intimidate checks and have Morrigan in your party. The pacing and inflection of the line he delivers before you pick yes/no to going to the tower is just perfect. I wish I knew what happened to him after Kester gets Lissie back.
I also liked Sister Theochild, especially her take on the Chant. Unfortunately running past her and the other one every time you enter Denerim gets especially annoying "And they shall be named maleficar.. blah blah blah". It's almost as bad as running past Gorim and his "Dwarven crafts, fine made dwarven..."

Male Companion - Alistair with Sten and Oghren very close behind
Male NPC - Bryce Cousland (favorite character in the game, to be honest), Gorim, Brother Genitivi, and Bann Teagan
Female Companion - Leliana, as a friend.. as a romance she is a bit scary.
Female NPC - Sister Justine (the curator outside the Denerim Chantry), Shianni, Danyla
Why: Alistair is the type of person I like, romance or no. I, myself, am shy, and tend to deflect people with sarcasm or humor so they don't actually speak to me. Romance wise he's a bumbling fool and has no idea what he is doing. I prefer that to a macho man. And I love Steve Valentine. Bunches.
Bryce Cousland is my favorite character, period. I love the different tones in his fatherly voice when you annoy him, show you care for him and are worried about him. I particularly love how he treats a daughter, letting her find her own path. I imagine he encourages sass and independance so he doesn't lose his girl to a suitor. So. CUTE.
Leliana is sweet, if a bit... odd. Honestly I just don't like Morrigan and Wynne much, so Leliana is all that is left. Once you get her to BFF status, though, it's pretty adorable.
Sister Justine was awesome. I really liked talking to her, a devout Andrastian, who actually believes in reason more than just 'follow your faith' that most of the Chantry folk you encounter... she's just adorable when she talks about her job and about history.
