The way he acts I'm inclined to think he's jealous of the mages and joins the Templars for that reason. If you cant be them, beat them.

I think joining the Templars was actually good for him. He needed to find a place of his own in the world rather than just follow you around and by the end of the game I was very proud of him. Hopefully the person who wants to kill him will change their mind.
Edit to add: I would also suggest reading your codex about him in act 3 if he joins the Templars. There's some very good insight to his character in there.

It still strikes me as odd that I dumped 439 hours into DA:O, but am already bored of the story in DA2

What happens if you let Carver join the templars but you side with mages? Bad things, I assume? I just didn't know if he came to his senses like Cullen or if he stayed against you.
As a Templar, Carver will follow Meredith for most of the game and seems to be quite intimidated by her. (Who wouldn't be?) However, at the end, like Cullen, he stands against her with you. The codex suggests that Carver has been silently questioning Meredith's methods for some time and has been unsure of himself in the Templar Order. It was not what he expected.

Carver was a HUGE whiner, yet he was still one of my favorite characters. He's just a very typical 18-year-old little brother. However, you'll notice as years go by, he grows out of it and slowly matures into a fairly decent man. I felt much more of a connection to him than I ever felt to Bethany because it felt like our relationship was so more real. And when a certain tragedy happens in Act 2, all I could think of was that I wanted to see my little brother and it's one of my only disappointments in the game that he didn't come home from The Gallows to talk to me after that happened.

This, exactly. Carver was one of my favorite characters, despite his constant moaning and snappishness.
By the end of the game I cared about him more than any other companion except my love interest. I thought he was a deep, complex, very well-written character. I liked him so much, in fact, that I wish it were possible for him to return in a future installment.
However, what everyone else was saying is still true. He IS an ass.

Quotable because its true.
I have this theory that bioware feared for us CRPG nerds potential lack of d-vitamin and created a lackluster game on purpose for health reason and concern. I choose to believe that over the explanation that they've gotten lazy and the quality has deteriorated.

He tells Meredith that she has to go through him to get his brother/sister, iirc.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm doing my first mage play-through and debating what to do about Carver. I'm not as attached to him as I was Bethany (and it isn't a bias about her name, really!) so I'm less, "No, he must be saved by Grey Warden-ism!" But again, Carver CHOOSES to go be a templar. Even if Bethany is okay in the circle... we still don't hear great things about the situation there. So I preferred her freedom. But I think I'd be okay with letting Carver go be a Templar. Become his own man and all that. We'll..uhm.. deal with the Lyrium withdrawal later.
After reading the Grey Warden and Templar/Circle letters of both siblings I think that they are both better of if they are not with the wardens. And being a warden is a death sentence. The Blight will get you no matter what. As a templar Carver just has to deal with the lyrium addiction (just look at Samson, leave the order before you get tottaly messed up by it. He looks better than the chatry doorguard in Denerim who took the lyrium his whole life) and you solve Bethanys problem with the templar who is harrasing her, if you kill the bastard Ser Alrik.

Agree.
When Carver shows up later and says something like, "The Hawke brothers together again," I said to myself "Let's show these Kirkwallabies how we roll in Ferelden!"
I put him in the line up instead of Aveline. It didn't matter that she was the better tank; he's my brother.

Yeah Carver IS an arse. He wasn't nice to all of the other characters either. He was rude to Isabela and Anders. I didn't drag him around with Merrill much so I didn't hear any random conversations between them. I like how Varric kept egging him on though.
Would have been interesting to see some convos between him and Sebastian though.

Like my Hawke said
-No .. You're a lazy kid that blame the world for everything.
Or something like that. The young adult that complain each time someone ask them something.Like the world`s against them and they're being manipulated. He was insecure at the beginning like so many ppl.
