I agree with the OP, and this is why I like Bioware games over those made by Bethesda: you do not feel like your character is alone. However, that is exactly how I felt while playing DA2. I have faith in Bioware, however, and I am thinking maybe they didn't realize how important these details were to player immersion? I know VO work is expensive, but I agree, even just having the option to have the same short "I love you/thanks for being a friend" conversation option available whenever would make the characters seem more connected to each other.
Hard to believe.... Words from a broken hearted gamer...

I do agree, but the NPC interaction can be mostly attributed to the fact someone is TELLING a story. They don't put the trivial things down. This has its advantages, and quite clearly disadvantages. I appreciate what the game has to offer while accepting that its not as personal as DAO.

The problem is those wonderful NPCs that you get to talk to are now turned into that long laundry list of sidequests that you have to do. There's TOO MUCH of them that they dilute the main story. I feel like the whole game is just pieced together by sidequests.

Varric might be telling the story, but the story is ultimately made by you as you get around.
I get what you are saying, but even so I dont think that it is right the way it is right now. Since its as much your story as Varric's, you should be the one to decide on how personal you want to go with the people of kirkwall. Some might not care, others clearly do.
That all aside from the fact that kirkwall looks about as booming and full of life as the sahara desert.
