It's definitely a 180 from Origins. There your companions would go crazy over an old chewed-up bone. In DA2, you find extremely meaningful, expensive, and poignant gifts and they all pout over it. XD It makes me giggle.
Fenris: SCREW YOUR BOOKS!
Hawke: O-okay. Maybe a sword?
Fenris: SCREW YOUR SWORDS!
Hawke:
Varric and Merrill take their gifts pretty well, IIRC.

However, it's not *really* about her shield so whether you sold it or not doesn't matter. She's frustrated.

As for Fenris not liking his gifts.. I had no problems with him not liking the presents. But I was in a friendship romance with him at the time and I don't know if that would affect things. WIll see when I get to that point in my second playthrough.

also with Fenris he seemed to like the book when my Hawke gave it to him, all he said was he couldn't read, so I chose the flirt option that makes my Hawke say she'll teach him to read

Really? Fenris really liked the sword when I gave it to him. He wasn't so much mad about the book, as he was "Uh... I can't read"
I figured Hawke aws just bad at gift giving XD

At least I was able to get Aveline to accept the sheild even though she was pissed off about it. RUDE.

Were you friends with him rather than rivals? I had him as a rival and he got pretty angry when I tried to give him the sword and wouldn't accept it because it's a status symbol for Tevinter Magisters. He accepted the book, albeit rather grudgingly.

My mage Hawke is rival-romancing him, so he tends to be angry about EVERYTHING. XD There is literally nothing she can say or do that doesn't tick him off royally. I love it.

To me Hawke inspires through power whereas the Warden inspired through understanding his/her party and the people around him/her. Though Hawke wanted to do something nice for someone he/she cared about he/she missed all the clues and ended up with sub par gifts (I gave her the shield right after hearing her party banter about how she feels no kinship to her namesake) whereas the Warden listened and understood the value and meaning of the things he/she gave. I never flirted with Fenris throughout the game but then I came to that part. My option was to flirt with him or leave him illiterate.cin_zia wrote...

I'd like to be able to teach the dude to read as a friend, but I picked the flirt option and he didn't seem to think it was something serious.

I was under the impression that heart doesn't always mean flirt, since half the time I pick heart with Aveline it's just a friendly thing. Friends can love too you know.
