Whoops, she got actually got mad when I gave her this because I sold off her ghetto starting sheild that belonged to Wesley as soon as she was able to equip the lion dlc sheild. My question is, if I had kept the thing, would she have had a better reaction?

I didn't sell it, but instead kept it in the storage box and she still got upset about it being sold. I don't know if having it in the inventory might have made a difference.

Not particularly.  Then she just snaps at you for trying to get her to replace Wesley's shield.  She seems to get equally mad either way.

It's definitely a 180 from Origins.  There your companions would go crazy over an old chewed-up bone.  In DA2, you find extremely meaningful, expensive, and poignant gifts and they all pout over it.  XD  It makes me giggle.

Fenris: SCREW YOUR BOOKS!
Hawke: O-okay.  Maybe a sword?
Fenris: SCREW YOUR SWORDS!
Hawke: :crying:

Varric and Merrill take their gifts pretty well, IIRC.

If she had is equipped, she'll acknowledge it.

However, it's not *really* about her shield so whether you sold it or not doesn't matter. She's frustrated.

Oh man, I just can't let her keep that sheild of Wesley's equipped, it's so crappy, lol. Fenris seems to like the book even though he can't read but lol, he did yeah at me when I tried to give him the sword last time. I was rivalmancing him, maybe having him at freind this time he won't get so upset... although Aveline was at freind with her sheild that she got mad about, lol.

If you have Wesley's shield in your inventory when you give Aveline the gift shield then she reacts fine, no whining about having sold it. I had it in my storage chest but after she bit my head off I reloaded and had it sit in my inventory for the gift.

As for Fenris not liking his gifts.. I had no problems with him not liking the presents. But I was in a friendship romance with him at the time and I don't know if that would affect things. WIll see when I get to that point in my second playthrough.

She snaps at you, but if you say the right thing she will keep it and thank you.
also with Fenris he seemed to like the book when my Hawke gave it to him, all he said was he couldn't read, so I chose the flirt option that makes my Hawke say she'll teach him to read :) It was sweet.

Fenris is angry about his gifts if he's a rival. Funny really.

Really?  Fenris really liked the sword when I gave it to him.  He wasn't so much mad about the book, as he was "Uh... I can't read"

I figured Hawke aws just bad at gift giving XD

Really? He refused the sword for me but I was a rival... and once I looked at the stats when became a real equipable sword... I put it on him anyways, mwhahahahaha.

At least I was able to get Aveline to accept the sheild even though she was pissed off about it. RUDE. :P

Were you friends with him rather than rivals? I had him as a rival and he got pretty angry when I tried to give him the sword and wouldn't accept it because it's a status symbol for Tevinter Magisters. He accepted the book, albeit rather grudgingly.

My mage Hawke is rival-romancing him, so he tends to be angry about EVERYTHING.  XD  There is literally nothing she can say or do that doesn't tick him off royally.  I love it.

I loved when Aveline just drops it on the ground. That was worth the whole tongue thrashing I got after.

To me Hawke inspires through power whereas the Warden inspired through understanding his/her party and the people around him/her. Though Hawke wanted to do something nice for someone he/she cared about he/she missed all the clues and ended up with sub par gifts (I gave her the shield right after hearing her party banter about how she feels no kinship to her namesake) whereas the Warden listened and understood the value and meaning of the things he/she gave. (The leather boots, the flower, etc)

I never flirted with Fenris throughout the game but then I came to that part. My option was to flirt with him or leave him illiterate. :?

I'd like to be able to teach the dude to read as a friend, but I picked the flirt option and he didn't seem to think it was something serious.

I gave Aveline the shield when she was close to full friendship, and initially she got offended (Wesley's shield was sitting in storage at Hawke's house, not sold), but I was able to turn that conversation around and get friendship points by saying something. (I think it was about how Hawke just wanted to give her a gift/do something nice for her.)

I was under the impression that heart doesn't always mean flirt, since half the time I pick heart with Aveline it's just a friendly thing. Friends can love too you know.
