So after you did Ander's intial quest, he flirts with the PC and get upsets as evidenced by rivalry points if the PC rebuffs his advances. I guess on one hand this can make sense, as Hawke is the first person he has told of his merge with Justice so naturally could feel a bond with him. On the other hand, if the player flirts back he says "no, I don't want to hurt you, etc.  In act 2, if you romance Anders he then immediatly asks to move in. He says he wants to do this, not because he loves Hawke, but for protection from the templars. Could it be that Anders wants to get close to Hawke soley for protection? By being friends/lovers with Hawke it causes Aveline not to have him arrested by the guard and also protects him from Meredith. In act 3 friendship or rivalry romance he lies to Hawke for his personal  quest. With rivalry Hawke he makes excuse that he already tolde Hawke that he was liar and a monster. With friendship Hawke he states that his quest for Justice is much more important than Hawke. now on one hand, it could be that he really does love Hawke but it is overpowered by the spirit of Vegenance, but on the other hand it could be that he was using Hawke all along for protection. What do the rest of you think?

He does love Hawke, but like he said, he was losing himself more and more each day and Justice would ultimately win. Hopefully you can save Anders somehow, because Justice is killing him inside.

This is evidenced by the fact that Anders said he should have trusted you before Onsino turns into an Abomination

He loved her/him.

Anders makes it VERY clear that he WILL hurt Hawke in the future. He spent three years trying to push the Champion away, but Hawke kept coming back. I imagine, that when the 'plan' was being formulated, Anders really felt there was no choice but to stay with Hawke lest s/he become suspicious and hunt him down - possibly foiling his plot.

Both. He uses and deceives Hawke no matter what, though.

Both are true.  He does use Hawke.  He also loves Hawke.  The two unfortunately do not need to be mutually exclusive.

I think Anders loves Hawke with everything that's still human in him.

I think Anders does love Hawke and at the same time took advantage of the situation too. Was it his plan the whole time? Probably not but as time goes by it was most likely the best way for him to achieve his goal and he warns Hawke several times this is relationship is doomed. I think it just surprises him that Hawke puts up with him should that choice be made. Or Hawke is just a glutton for punishment ;)

One of Hawke's earlier flirt lines was "Hurt me!  I might like it."

Apparently she wasn't joking.

He probably did. In the last 3 years, Anders developed an acute form of manic depression and says Hawke is the only one keeping him sane.

Saying he's sane is stretching things.  He's not -- he's an abomination, and doesn't know where he ends and Justice begins.  I do believe he loves Hawke, but in an obsessive type of way.  Justice, however, does not, and is taking over more and more.  I don't know that he was using Hawke, though, except, well, when he was using Hawke whether romanced or no (but he was far more manipulative to a romanced Hawke).  Anders is a trainwreck.  He starts out ok, but watching him fall apart is sad.

I do think Anders is being sincere in his feelings towards Hawke, however, he never loses sight of his ultimate goal which he holds above their love for each other. Kind of reminds me of the scene in Casablanca where Bogey tells Bergman that the problems of two people don't amount to a hill of beans compared to what's happening around them.

I'm just going by what the codex said. It's evident that while Justice merging with his own consciousness is slowly poisoning him, he does care for Hawke in some way. He warns Hawke many times not to pursue him, but hardheaded Hawke does it anyway. He only manipulates him/her to an extent because he places the welfare of his people above all else. In other words, he's not just using Hawke. He's trying to build a world where he can openly love someone like Hawke without forcefully being torn apart.

Anders does love Hawke, I believe, and holds on to them for a spark of happiness is a dark world. And to be honest, from my point of view, lovers always use one another, so I'm biased. It doesn't have to be a bad thing.

It's my fault. I pulled away in the last minute and gone with Merrill instead. He was just a bit too unstable, even in Act 2. I thought he might commit suicide or something, but it turns out much worse.

Yes, it was sad to see him fall apart. I agree that he is much more manipulative to a romanced Hawke. I think on the playthrough where my mage romanced him, she said something like "I'll agree to do this, but only because you are blackmailing me."

Thats an interesting question, thought that myself. Killing him is justified by believing he just used you, but in his defence wasnt it circumstance that he asked you to speak to the chantry lady while he set up his endgame? he couldve asked somone else ot do it.

however I chose to not kill him and they still had the flame of love burning bright, =)

I think Hawke and Anders used each other. I also think it depends on if Hawke was a mage or not.

Either way, I just love trainwrecks and Anders is the king of them.
