In act 2, in a cave that also has one of the Evil Tomes, is a node of "corrupted lyrium" crafting ingredient.  Is there any special significance of this?

Story-wise, I think it's related to that red lyrium you find in the deep roads, although I haven't reached the end of the game.

What purpose does it serve?

I don't want to spoil the storyline, but it brings out the worst in people and amplifies strength and has magical powers. There's a bit of a cliffhanger at the end of the game and most of what it 'is' is still guess work, but it's important.
