merrill blood mage works better for me, load up on sustainables and then hit blood mage, shes the closest thing to trailer hawke you can find.
Are you kidding? Anders has better damage, better cooldowns....Merril is nice but Anders is King.

Merrill has the benefit of never needing Willpower, being able to stack sustained abilities up to 100%, and generally taking less damage because of her sustains.
Anders, on the otherhand, still needs a bit of Willpower for Martyr to give him any workable chunk of Mana and he takes damage while he does it. He also takes a WHOLE lot more damage while in Vengeance (Damage Resistance can go Negative).
In my mind, they both can spam cast on end towards the end of the game, it's just Anders has to take breaks here or there if he doesn't get infused with the auto-heal thing.

As a test, I had a three wave fight where Merrill obliterated an entire wave, ranked the second wave solo while they slowly died and she constantly regenerated, then smoke the third wave just like the first.
She is obscenely powerful if built correctly.

La, la, la, I can't hear you. La, la, la.
On topic, though, Anders has a bad habit of turning into ludicrous gibs if anyone happens to target him while he remains in Vengeance mode, and his Spirit Healer-esque line is strictly inferior to Hawke's version.
Sadly, if Merrill had access to the Creation Tree, I don't think anyone would even argue about who is the king of the mage's (significantly smaller) hill.

Yay! Like healing! And holds! And party buffs! Man, I love my ranger rogues party buff that gives them elemental resistance, and the other one that gives bonuses to their armor...sevenplusone wrote...
It's too bad damage mages are outclassed by ranged rogues in every single facet of the game.

If you're getting heals and auras on a damage mage, then you're better off just running him support/CC mage and grabbing a ranged rogue or 3.
Getting support abilites on a damage mage is just a bad idea. Leave support to the supporters, and damage to the damage dealers.

Don't think Mr Vengeance can do that.
EDIT: I get that bug with "Use Item" tactics too. Every now and then the item field goes blank. Might have something to do with running out of health pots maybe? Not sure.

If that's your argument, then let me point out that Mages have access to two long last AoE abilities while Ranger Rogues only have one. Not to meantion a fully upgraded Walling Bomb in a large crowd is just you sitting there watching things explode.sevenplusone wrote...
