I played my first run through as a DW rogue - I want to try either a ranger or a 2h Warrior.  At the moment, I think I want to try ranged.

So what would be the best setup for me?

Ranger Hawke
2H or Tank n Spank warrior (Fenris or Aveline - though I can't stand Aveline)
DPS spot.  I really like Varric, he's hilarious, but I am wondering if I should go with an offensive mage, so only option is Merril.  The ranger synergy goes best with brittle right as opposped to stagger?  So, does that mean I should pick up a mage and use Winters grasp and cone of cold and such, as opposed to Merril's blood magic stuff?
Healer - Anders, duh!

Any suggestions?

Anders doesn't have to be just your support/healer ****.  He can do some damn good DPS while in Vengeance.  One nice thing about being a Healer in DA2 is that it doesn't just limit you to that role.  You only need 5 points for Anders to get every bit of healing he can, then another 4 for upgraded Heroic Aura and Haste.  Beyond that, you're free to invest into DPS talents at will.

Tank-wise, it really depends on what you run for DPS IMO.  If you run double Mage, Fenris works better, as auto-attack stagger + Chain Lightning can decimate things while keeping your party safe.  If you run double Rogue, Fenris or Aveline will work stellar.  I personally prefer Aveline over Fenris, simply because she cannot be stunned, knocked down or backwards, and her Damage Resistance is through the roof at the end.

Decide on those two things, then pick either Varric or Merrill to fit your tastes.  You really can't go wrong with either of them.

Well, since I really like Varric, and played with Aveline first run thru, I am thinking Fenris, Anders and dbl ranged rogue.

As far as synergy goes, I'll be using class combos based on Anders' brittle right? I don't think Archers have much with regards to staggered opponents, or did I miss something?

I play an Archer on Hard. Use upgraded Archers Lance (Punishing Lance) as your main attack. Its devastatingly effective.

Attributes should be 1 dex and 2 cun every level. Make your cunning sky high so your crits do massive damage.

Basically my build is this (note, you'll have to buy extra talent points when you have the money to do so):

Get Precision at level 3, its buff is always worth having on.

Fully upgrade Pinning shot
Use upgrade burst arrow against groups of brittle enemies
Archers Lance is great for instant killing groups of normal enemies. Always try to hit a line of enemies.

Get the talents to get auto crits with stealth and use that with Pinning shot

Take Assassin first to get bloodlust, it helps a great deal with refilling your stamina. Archers drain stamina quickly. Full upgrade Mark of Death, its fantastic.

From there branch into Shadow and work your way until you get Shadow Veil. Then get Lingering Shroud. By now you should be an unholy killing machine but make sure to stock up on Stamina potions, archers burn through Stamina very quickly.

You can now fill out the Assassin Tree if you want. Assassinate is powerful but not really needed asap so you can wait till your a higher level. Theres also various nice skills to pick up such as Blindside if you can find spare ability points to get them.

Stealth is your key to reducing argo on your archer. This build will give you 2 stealth skills and evade so you should have no problem keeping agro off your Archer.

Against boss its fine to just park your archer in a corner and let it pin ****** the boss all day long. With Percision up and the right gear, its easy to get at least a 50% crit rate and 70%+ chance to hit vs Bossses. Plus, this build makes your Crit Damage sky high.
