How does it work? Do additional replies pop up depending on your first choice in the game (the exaggerated prologue), or the more you "fit into" specific character role (diplomatic, sarcastic or tough), the more options you get? Are there dialogue lines that can "fail" because you was't "olivepalm" enough? Are there any diplomatic solutions you can miss if you don't "specialise" on one of the "tones"?

Is there any system at all?

While I can't speak to the specifics of the entire system, there definitely seems to be an accumulated character demeanor of sorts, either that or some other variable I've glossed over.  The only real proof I can give to this is in the form of an anecdote.  The companion quest for Isabela that enlists you to discover where Martin's cargo is being stored, there is a conversation with the dock worker who asks for a bribe, which you can either threaten to kill him, pay him, or leave him alone.  I've had the threaten only work once over the four times I've reached that point.  Only my Rogue was able to scare him.

Now, it could just be class based, but those generally are featured under the martial (sheriff star) responses.  Also, I was probably the biggest ****** on my Rogue (mostly red, aggressive responses) at that point in the game.

Generally, you get the same responses beyond a singular different line of dialogue.  The conversation system in this one appeared to be more for your party friendship/rivalry system rather than divergent story paths (which there are seemingly only a handful).

On my diplomatic run, I was able to prevent that Dalish assassin on the wounded coast from attacking the ex-werewolf with a diplomatic chat option in the lower left corner of the wheel. That option wasn't available on my snarky run.

I was able to use a snarky response to get money for elvish smuggler at the beginning of the game, by constantly choosing second line (you can also ask guard about your uncle, and Hawke's "persuasion" repsonse almost the same every time, only pictogramm changes). Had to use "Aveline persuasion" before.

I think that settles it.. DA2 has ME2 persuasion mechanics. You only need to hit one line constantly to get better results. I think you still need to think a little when picking lines, but that's One Point for "Twasdumbeddoohhwn!" team, I guess.
