Alright, nobody shoot me.

I just finished playing through with male!Hawke and am now watching my roommate playthrough with female!Hawke.

I found both actors to have pleasant voices, but after hearing female!Hawke's delivery, I find that she's very monotone compared to male!Hawke.

Male!Hawke's voice had so much range and emotion, I really bought every line said as "real" and I found his delivery to be just incredible. Kudos to the voice actor. <3

female!Hawke I think was still very good, but again, I found her a bit flat, like she almost always sounded kind of bored, or like someone reading lines as opposed to a 3 dimensional character speaking them.

(and I'm not just saying that because of any gender bias, I played through Mass Effect solely as Fem!Shepard and cringe every time I hear male!Shepard haha)

So guys, who did you find was better and why? Did any of you find that Hawke was better suited to different personalities based on gender (ex. sarcastic fem!Hawke vs sarcastic male!Hawke)

I think Jennifer Hale is much better than Mark Meer for Shepard, but DudeHawke and Lady Hawke both sound spot on to me. I understand what you mean by 'range,' but the 'flat' tone makes her charming lines a bit more droll and her diplomatic and aggressive lines a bit more measured.

I don't see it as a quality issue. Dude Hawke is slightly more expressive while Lady Hawke is slightly more reserved.

Male Hawke is good at what he does, but if you decide to stray off a path [If you're diplomatic and go to aggressive, you notice a voice change, that seems strange.

Female Hawke's been pretty good so far, but I'd want a little more emotion. just a twinge.

Haha yes Jennifer Hale > Mark Meer any day. Sorry, Mark.

I'm glad it's not just me seeing the range thing. My roommate told me I was just biased because I have a crush on default!Male Hawke, haha.

That's an excellent point though, I guess most of it is the sarcastic options work much more believably for male!Hawke.

Another way I noticed the difference in voice acting was with the romances. I haven't been through all the romances, but I noticed that when my roommate's fem!Hawke was hitting on Merril, she sounded completely bored, whereas when my male!Hawke was hitting on Fenris, he actually sounded, well interested.

But, I'm definitely not trying to bash female!Hawke's voice actress, I think she does a fine job, I just found that male!Hawke was more expressive, which I personally found more engaging and believable.

i like them both, in particular for fem hawke i love the sarcastic replies...

i agree they are quite different but, as maria Caliban said, i dont think one is really better than the other (as in ME), it is just a different style to bring the char alive

Yeah, I felt that added to it. I try not to jump to extremes like that in options, but male!Hawke actually sounds like he's gone from being polite to being angry, but still the same character, which just impresses me to no end.

I wanted Simon Templeman for hawk =( he was Logain for those who dont know.

I played Lady hawk in first playthrough, by accident lol but yea I liked the voice acting though sometimes she sounded a little too posh/noble, like as if it was an act. so far though in my 2nd play through male hawk is great =)

Male Hawke for sure. Mr. Boulton does the sarcastic/aggressive lines extremely well. For female Hawke, it just sounds non-threatening. Ms. Wyatt's voice sounds too, I don't know, sweet and unimposing.

I liked Lady Hawke's voice, though I primarily went with the sarcastic/charming responses. I was satisfied with their delivery mostly because they weren't a biting sort of sarcastic. They were more of a joking/silly tone, which was what I was aiming for with my character. Nothing like cracking jokes at the Viscount while he's holding his dead son in his arms.

Hoping to get around to playing a Male Hawke sometime soon so I can get a good feel for his voice.

I liked both voices, but I found that femhawke came across kind of awkward when delivering the witty lines, and malehawke seems to pull them off better.

I don't think female!Hawke sounded flat at all. I haven't played a runthrough with male!Hawke, so I'm not sure how his lines are in comparison, but I definitely liked female!Hawke's voice.

Oh, goodie. Yet *another* stupid Meer vs. Hale argument sneaks into this forum. Can you people kindly restrict your opinions on this subject to one thread (that is in the Mass Effect forums, at that) and quit annoying everyone else with this crap? I am seriously getting tired of hearing about this every. single. place. I. go. For the love of [deity], WE GET IT! You don't like [voice actor]. Now STFU about it already and let everyone else browse this site in peace!

No it makes sense because an agreesive attitude sounds different then a diplomatic attitude.

Hm, Male Hawke's voice is just... I dunno, delicious. Female Hawke's voice gets lost in the crowd for me. It's not bad, it's just not distinctive and does fall a little flat for me.

Female!Hawke sounds hot when sarcastic and seems to have more emotion in that category than Male!Hawke.

In terms of playing a Large overacting Ham, yes, Jennifer Hale does > Mark Meer.

As far as I've seen in DA2, I prefer Boulton to Wyatt as well.  Though my opinion of the latter is negatively biased after selecting way too many "Sarcastic" options at inappropriate times - but I get the feeling that would happen as well had I done the same thing with Boulton.  The resulting lines were painfully unfunny.  It proved to me that BioWare certainly didn't intend for the player to simply pick Diplomatic / Charming / Aggressive every time.

I prefer female Hawke, hands down. The thing I enjoyed most about her voice is that it felt human. There were times when she got pissed, times when she was soft, sarcastic, panicked, afraid. She didn't seem larger than life because, at the end of the day, she really wasn't. I went the diplomatic route at first, ending it with a strong aggressive third act, and it just felt right.

Funny. I was wondering what people thought of this just a few hours ago. xD

You say "flat", I say "consistent". I like how I'm able to switch between dialogue choices with Fem!Hawke and still feel like she's still speaking within the same sentence, if that makes sense. With M!Hawke I was switching between diplomatic and aggressive constantly, and while the emotions were expressed well, it felt... bipolar.

I like both male and female Hawke. There's some lines that sound better one one actor, but I enjoy them both. Female Hawke's exasperated sigh and frustration during Aveline's quest was just priceless. But to echo what Calla S said above, female Hawke does not sound larger than life constantly, she sounds like a real person forced to make choices, a welcome reprieve in games today.

So I like them both, I didn't have the massive turnoff from one actor like I did with Mass Effect/Mass Effect 2.

Jennifer Hale was far superior as femshep, but both Hawke voice actors are pretty damn good I'd say. Bravo.

I haven't yet made a full playthrough as Lady Hawke, but I gotta say Boulton's acting is stellar. He nails absolutely all the lines (aside from a couple of diplomatic ones in which he sounds like a bit of a dolt).

Male Hawke sounds like a shizo if you don't choose the same path over and over. Female Hawke is a lot better in that regard, but they both fail compared to Shepard's actor/actress when you stray from a single path.
I found the delivery of both Hawke's humour to be dull. Sure, the tone was right, but the delivery was just god awful which made the joke only funny if you were enchanted by their voice in the first place.(you know how when you're attracted to someone you simply laugh at their jokes no matter how unfunny they are? yea)
