As a straight male gamer I too found the romancing "options" lacking.
Mostly because the romance angles on Anders and Fenris apparently wouldn't stop. I think I was presented with the opportunity at least 10 times for each, and even immediately upon meeting Fenris, whereas the angles of a hetero nature weren't "presenting" themselves nearly as aggressively (certainly not for the lack of trying on my part ).
It's a dialogue option - one among several. How can it be presenting itself aggressively? Just ignore it like you ignore the option to kill someone you'd rather free, or the humour option when you think a joke is inappropriate. Playing as a male Hawke there was only one occasion in the whole game where I was forced to select a romance-related dialogue option with no other choices - the part where Anders flirts with you. I picked the refusal option and that was that - he never hit on me again and siding with the mages I had more than enough opportunity to make up for the small rivalry gain you get from turning him down (and if you're not siding with the mages you're going to gain rivalry with Anders anyway).
Also, the majority of players taking advantage of all of those Fenris and Anders flirt options are people playing a female Hawke, so if anything you should be complaining that the game focused too much on the male LIs and therefore female players. I don't think that was even the case, though. Each romanceable companion (and also Aveline) had multiple opportunities to flirt with them every time you had a conversation with them, and if you weren't getting enough personal conversations with them then you weren't getting enough friendship or rivalry points to trigger it.
