This. I'm still fairly early in the game, and yet I cannot help wondering, "My God, is everyone in Kirkwall gay, but me?"

K12aze wrote...

I'm at a loss here.....are people that insecure with thier own sexuality that a video game char makeing a pass at them ( that can be deflected and not brought up again ) totally ruins the game for them?

It's not that. It's the simple fact that if gay or bi players of the game are served properly, why not the straight ones as well? I'm certanly not a designer, but the way I see things, there should be balance in everything, including sexual orientation. I know that BioWare is just trying to please everyone, I know that whatever they will do, players will still want more, and I am sympathetic to that dilemma. It's just that sometimes you've got to own up the fact that you can't please everyone, and then follow the more reasonable thing to do. In my opinion, making every romanceable companion bi is not it.

Those are my thoughts on the matter. It's certainly not ruining my walkthrough or anything, but is is rather disappointing at this point.

This nonsense just shows that you couldn't find an argument for your response. 'Homophobic' and 'troll' are nonsense words ? Wut ? How ? What exactly is a nonsense word ? Go buy a dictionary, you will find that those words have a fairly specific meaning...
As I posted earlier...:
The definition of homophobia: Any opinion that is negative towards, or critical of, homosexuality or homosexuals.
The definition of troll: A person expressing an opinion you don't like.

Essentially,
calling someone a homophobe or troll is equivalent to calling them a
poopyhead. You are not really saying anything at all when you use those
words.
Uhm, no, a troll is someone who only participates in online discussions to start arguments and flaming and not to normally discuss with others. It has nothing to do with not liking an opinion.
Homophobia is an irrational disgust and fear towards homosexuality
Dr. Impossible wrote...
That's like saying I don't like Japanese, only Chinese, so Chinese should be removed from the game...
Yes, it's exactly like that.
You don't like it, good for you. Other people do, it's there for them, not for you, it's optional. The game is not designed to specifically suit your own individual tastes and dislikes. You can easily find out about the optional content before you buy, so if you don't want it don't do the optional gay content or don't buy the game.
"If you don't like it, don't play it." What an original argument.
But that's exactly how it is. It's OPTIONAL for a demographic you don't belong to. Don't want a same sex romance ? Then don't choose the heart icons and let those who want it, it doesn't change any other aspect of the game. It's only there if you actively choose to have it. Should everything you like and I don't be removed from the game, even if it would never affect my experience unless I actively choose it ?

I see. And what does this have to do with anything we're talking about?

People are complaining about "gay" content in the game (i.e., "I don't like gay content because I just don't like it.").  They don't have to experience it but the fact that it is in the game taints it for them.  Like, fruit salad on the menu.

Putting homosexual content in a childrens game/story should be frowned upon. It's motive is political .

Funny, my game cover had a red sticker saying "USK ab 18" which generally means for over 18's over so what is your point.

ESRB summises:

This is an action-adventure role-playing game in which players assume
the role of a warrior who completes quests in a mythical land. Players
use swords, bows and arrows, and magical spells (e.g., fireballs, energy
beams) to defeat human-like enemies and fantasy creatures (e.g., giant
spiders, demons, ogres, golems).

Attacks are often accompanied by slashing sounds, large explosions, and
cries of pain. Blood splatter effects occur when enemies are hit, and
damage sometimes results in dismemberment or decapitation-blood stains
and body parts occasionally appear in the environment.

In one cutscene, a man's severed head is held up then tossed to the
ground. During the course of the game, characters sometimes engage in
sexual dialogue (e.g., "Why is it always about sex with you?" and
"Sailing is like sex. Do it wrong, and it'll make you sick."). Players
can also initiate brief cutscene sequences in which couples (male-female
or same-sex) are shown kissing and embracing one another in a bedroom
as the screen fades to black.

In one cutscene, a woman kneels in front of a male character and appears
to perform fellatio-there is no depiction of the sex act; the camera
pans out to the rest of the room. The words "a*s," "bastard," and "sh*t"
appear in dialogue.

Please explain how this is close- minded.

To a large percentage of straight males there is no 'YUK'  factor to girl on girl .That's very open minded.

Male on male is about as repulsive as beastiality to a straight male..Modern society is generally open minded and accepts homosexuality....It's wholly improper to accuse someone of being close-minded because they object to penis up your bum in games.

In modern usage troll has no other meaning than the one I described.

Homophobia is an irrational disgust and fear towards homosexuality

Then why doesn't anyone use the word in accordance with this definition?

A more accurate analogy would be that the fruit salad contains an ingredient that the person doesn't like.

And this 1% of gamers nonsense is bullshlt.  According to the ESA, 40% of gamers are women.

According to BioWare's own statistics (IIRC) only 20% of ME2 players ever bothered with playing as Femshep.

Various studies put the percentage of homosexuals among the population at 1 in 10 to 1 in 20.

I can't really say anything about ladies, but 1 in 20 males homosexual? You need to hit yourself on the head if you think it can be true.

Ray Joel Oh wrote...

Makes sense for Bioware to try to tap those markets, in addition to targeting straight men.  And marketing savvy is neither a liberal nor conservative concept.

Tapping in those markets is risky, becasue it may be aversive to other markets... of which this thread is a sign.

From comments like David Gaiders declaring that he used Twilight as in inspiration for Dragon Age 2 romance

I'll just point out that I did no such thing.

Twilight came up in conversation and I said that the romance in Twilight was well done-- for what it was meant to be-- and was interesting enough to merit examination. That's all.

There's a lot of assumptions in there, not least of which is a certain amount of privilege (not to mention an assumption that all straight male gamers must like the same thing), but I'll leave that to be discussed by everyone else.

I can't believe Biowararians (what? It's a word) still post on these forums. They mention something and it gets turned around, questioned, picked to pieces etc.

Good sir, if you are serious about that comment, I'd highly recommend seeing a doctor / looking for a job that does not require any complex thinking. You obviously seem to be unable to understand basic words in the English language, so checking a dictionary might prove being useful.

Perhaps he could have phrased it better, but there’s nothing wrong with a straight male gamer liking F/F romances and disliking M/M. I’m not against homosexuality. I’m just not attracted to men, therefore I don’t want to be hit on by men. It’s really that simple. I am attracted to women, therefore I don’t have the same problem with F/F romances.
Gay romances should be included in the game, but they should be unique to a character instead of interchangeable.

twilight romance and everything regarding that book is everything but well done, it appealed to the common lowest denominator, teenage prepubescent girls, which is good "for the book", but that's not your core demographic, not it will ever be

Who said it was? Did I?

The book set out to appeal to a particular group. It did that well. I tried to get through it, mostly out of curiosity's sake, but it's not for me. That said, only a presumptuous fool would believe there's nothing to be learned in how it managed to do what it did. I look to a lot of sources to figure out what they did right and what they did wrong, and what lessons can be learned from them. That's why I play many RPG's, as well.

much like Call of Duty FPS fans were never, ever, your audience when you made DA:O, not they will never, ever be, even if you lower the game standards with DA 2 to appeal to an audience that never cared for your games, nor the genre itself, and they never will

Well, with fans like these, who could ask for more, right? ;)

You're making some assumptions that I'm not going to argue with. You're free to go ahead thinking them, if you like, I just prefer that people don't stick words in my mouth.

to be honest it does feel like action got turned up to 11 and rpg got turned down to about 5, the vaunted choices and growth of the world either don't make a difference or don't actually happen at all.   Enjoyed the game but the RPG side felt weak.

I think it's not a question of full, outright homosexuality. It also includes those who are bisexual and also those who "fantasize" without any intention of going any further.
