Has anyone done this fight? It's one of the evil tome locations.
Five waves I think. First is one elite rage demon and shades. Next is elite desire demon and abominations. Next comes more rage demons and shades, then an arcane horror, shades, abominations, and finally, after three tries when I finally thought I had it, a revenant with the longest health bar I've seen on a non-boss enemy shows up and cuts down Anders and Fenris who were clinging to life.
I'm level 16, doing this on Hard. Am I too low level, or is this fight simply impossible?
I have to say I really, really dislike this game right now. Some of these fights are just stupid.

I could not beat it when I first encountered it. Now, it is my last side mission so I'll give it one more go before I move on to Act3.

Is that the one with the golem in the corner? I was level 15-16 when I did that one. Have you got health potions/elfroot potions, maybe take life wrads as well. What are you playing as, whos in your party?

Hold position in a corridor and send someone to lure them a few at a time.

I'm playing a DW rogue Hawke with Fenris tanking and Anders and Merril.
I position Anders and Merril with their backs to the door and use Fenris to pull a few at a time to the doorway. My rogue Hawke goes back and forth between helping out Fenris and cleaning up the stragglers that get past. At one point I actually had the third wave cleaned up and was almost able to save except for one hostile in the far corner of the main room that was just standing there.
The problem was, when I sent Fenris back in, a ton of Shades and Abominations and an Arcane Horror all spawned at once and ran right past him to swarm my casters. No idea how they drew aggro from all the way back at the door. The bigger problem is, with the sheer number of mobs in that wave all streaming through the door, my rogue Hawke either gets swarmed or is simply physically blocked and I can't seem to land assassinate on the Arcane Horror before he gets to the doorway. Once that happens it is usually game over.
I did manage to kill the Horror on my final attempt, but by that time I had a pair of shades that were basically juggling Merril and Anders in the corners (the knockback is really out of control, I feel like I'm getting owned at Street Fighter) and the final set of rage demons and Revenant showed up to wreck Hawke and Fenris. I felt like I was close, but I'm really not sure since by the time I saw the Revenant piling on with the two Greater Rage demons, Merril and Anders were basically dead.

I led them all back into the staircase. It makes it much eaiser to AOE the weaker mobs. I used Horror/Petrify on the elites and took care of their minions. Use lots of potions. I did it on hard with Merrill, Level 15 Mage hawke, Fenris and Isabella.

I beat it on nightmare. I had to lure them down the staircase because they kept going for my casters.

I actually didn't find it that hard. I did it on at level 14 on hard with a two handed warrior. First time too. I brought Avaline, Anders, and Varric with me. You might have more luck if you had two tanks rather than just the one. And kill the arcane horror and desire demon first because they do the most damage. The others fall pretty easily afterwards.

Never use Fenris as the draw, always use your rogue to draw enemies in allowing you to stealth if you are in danger, and keeps Fenris blocking the door. Also Arcane horrors laugh at magic attacks but die pretty quickly by blades/bows so remember that in fighting them. might also add Varric to the mix, Bianca is awesome in the extreme for pulling enemies or just plane wiping the floor from further back.

Just had the same shock. Poor level design I might say, because running aroun and kiting was damn hard and not very rewarding a tactic with all those straddlers left and right picking of your companions.
But the moment you just hold positions in the corridor from where you came and have at least one 2Hander at your disposal, it gets pancake easy. Very poor design.
But that is also the solution to this otherwise darn hard level. Position your 2Hander/Tank as near at the entry door as possible, your distance companions, ... well ... in the distance back down, hit the marker, run back and then just block the entrance with your warriors. I had Aveline and myself (2Hander) blocking the entrance (myelf with Bravery damage stacking, w00t) and almost nothing came through. What was in reach of my blade was essentially dead if it wasn't elite rank, Aveline simply stood there like a stonewall and Anders and Varric where taking their shots too. Just make sure you don't mindlessly walk into the last wave, because this one has 1x Desire Demon, 1x Arcane Horror and 1x Revenant and they don't simply come at you. Take you warrior/rogue and eleminate the AH as fast as possible and the resume the tactic and the whole fight is cake.

Not sure if it matters in DA 2 but if I recall right the Desire demons summon more and more demons to fight for her so you need to burn her down fast with focus fire.
