She assumes you sold it unless she's actually got it equipped, but she's also unhappy if she DOES have it equipped, just for different reasons. She's going to be unhappy there no matter what.

Unequipped it: She's unhappy it's being passed around.
Never removed it from her person: ???

I have a feeling in the coming months the people I'm least going to understand are those who didn't like Aveline.

This particular dialogue is triggered by giving her a shield as a gift. 

She's upset because Hawke is expressing sentimental attachment to a shield by giving this particular one to her, despite the fact you sold or unequipped her dead husband's shield likely for unsentimental, totally utilitarian reasons. 

...also if you say the right things you get +Friendship instead of +Rivalry.

If she's equipped it (I imagine this is the same as if you've never removed it. I doubt the game tracks how often you've unequipped/equipped gear), then she says something like "Do you expect me to pawn Wesley's shield?"

And if you have it in the storage chest, she assumes you sold it.

why would you "pass it around" anyway? A 2H-Tank is much better than WnS-Tank, thus you really don't need it, so why not just give it to her? It's not like you're gonna grow poor without it =S
