The strategy guide says there is a possibility to keep the shard that Hawke/Varric find in Bartrand's Mansion. If you give it to Varric, he gains 3 rune slots on Bianca.

If you don't give it to him, does that assume you keep it? I really want the Primeval rune that comes out of it so any help on how to get it/obtain the shard for Hawke  (not Varric) is greatly appreciated.

Just tell him to give you the shard. He doesn't put up much of a fight about it and will thank you for it later. Sandal will forge the rune instead of destroying it.
